College Admission Deadlines Confusion??

<p>If a college application deadline (common app) is say.. 1/1/11, does that mean:</p>

<ol>
<li>the application needs to be SUBMITTED before the deadline </li>
</ol>

<p>or</p>

<ol>
<li>the college needs to RECEIVE the application before the deadline</li>
</ol>

<p>Because I submitted my common app on basically the morning of the last day (thought I sent it a few days earlier but I actually didn't, thank god I checked!), and got the confirmation e-mail after the deadline.</p>

<p>Well some schools require it to have to be received earlier, I think. I know like for Wash U their scholarship deadlines are a received by date.</p>
