College Admissions Statistics Class of 2021: Early and Regular Decision Acceptance Rates

All of the information here will change for every single school listed because waitlist acceptances will not be included until May or later so this is a bit premature, but I get why people are interested. I was accepted to a highly selective LAC not listed here, and I received the statistics of the admitted class of 2021 through an email from the college. I am not going to post them (even though they are awesome) because I figure the school has some reason for not posting them publicly, or they would have done so already. But, I would just say that if a school you were admitted to is not listed here, make sure to check your email - you may be privy to that information. I wish everyone well. It was a fun journey! I know not everyone can visit schools, but if you can I hope that you do. I went ED for the school that felt like family and I have never looked back.

Speculated Overall Acceptance Rates–

Northwestern: 8.7% - 10.1% (based on 37050 applicants this year. 10.1% assumes NU admitted the same as last year (3743), and 8.7% assumes NU admitted 500 less than last year. The latter is based on the difference between '20 and '19, where NU admitted 500 less students, but such a large decrease again seems unlikely)

Vanderbilt: 10.2% (generally fills half of class with ED, or 800 admits. 23.6% admit rate = 3390 ED applicants. So in total, 3182 admits for 31231 applications)

Amherst: 12.6% (rejection email mentions ~9200 applications this year; assuming same number of admitted students [1161] as last year)

Wesleyan 15.4%

@jackwang0703, is that overall or just RD?

You left off UCB and UCLA.

@Chembiodad That’s overall.

http://wesleyanargus.com/2017/03/30/class-of-2021-wesleyan-record-low-acceptance-rate/

I get a feeling that once you get to the point where you are rejecting 9 out of 10 applicants, you’re probably throwing the baby out with the bath water.

@denydenzig: Eh. The super-selective schools aren’t going to balloon their undergraduate student bodies. And because of misplaced emphasis on admit rate by gullible HS kids and too many adults who should know better, the elite colleges are still incented to keep driving their admit rate down even when there is no institutional need to do so.

Northwestern - 9.0% (overall)
RD - ~7.2%

Any information on Lehigh, Bucknell or Northeastern Universities?

Admit rates can be deceiving, that’s for sure. I hope anyone reading these posts are looking at all of the other variables that will impact their chance of admission. For instance, BU looks more selective than BC and Wake based on these numbers but all other things being equal, I would say it is easier to get in to BU than Wake or BC. Do your research and look at the 25-75 percentile score ranges also…no one variable will give you an answer, so you need to look at all of it. Also, of course, look at your school’s Naviance scattergrams…not statistically valid, but just another data point that can help you determine your Reach, Match and Safeties.

I think there is another thread on this on CC but in general it seems like at the less elite schools (but still darn good ones) it’s getting slightly easier to get in. I think if you have the means to pay (i.e., not applying for aid) at the need aware schools (which is most of them, but not the ones on this thread), they are willing to take a chance on you even if you don’t have the stats. I’ve seen this A LOT this year.

@collegemomjam My son at BU would argue about BC being on equal footing. He just sent us this link showing they were named “International Powerhouse” by Times Higher Ed:
http://www.bu.edu/today/2017/times-higher-education-elite-universities/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=FBPAGE&utm_campaign=prbumain#bottom

I’ve seen that list two and BU is absolutely a great school…but keep in mind those rankings include graduate schools. My comment was simply as it relates to undergraduate admissions. From our town, at least, people have an easier time getting in to BU than BC…although both are hard do get in. Lots of different criteria to look at, but perhaps the most objective being the scores…looking at last year’s ACT scores, BC’s middle 50% was 30-33 and BU’s was 27-31. I’m pretty sure this year’s stats, probably up for both schools, would be a similar spread.

This is why people need to look at more than just acceptance rates. There is a lot more to the equation.

Is there a reason the UCs aren’t in your list? You have other public schools listed.

Hi @sprayupets, has UCLA published their admit rate for the applicant class of 2017? The Washington Post reported an admit rate of 18% for applicant class of 2016. You’ve listed them at 20% which suggests a surprising rate increase. I haven’t seen anything like that reported anywhere else. Here is the link to the 18% reported by the Post in January 2017.

As far as I know, @sbjdorlo the UC schools have not posted their data. @PragmaticMom I only put a rough number in for UCLA because they posted a notice on their site of an acceptance rate below 20%. The UC schools do release a very comprehensive report to the Board of Regents but later on and until then this is what we have.
