College Admissions Statistics Class of 2023

This is random but I’ve noticed that the pairs Duke and Penn, as well as Dartmouth and Vanderbilt have both had nearly parallel acceptance rates for the past three years. Probably just a coincidence but I found that interesting nonetheless.

Colby is first and foremost a great school. In terms of factors that typically increase applications they adopted quite a few—they accept common app, there is no supplemental essay, and no application fee. They eliminated loans from fin aid packages a few years ago, then last year capped the parent contribution at $15K, for families making up to $150K/year. Last year they also went test optional.

It’s interesting to see the varying strategies that colleges implement–from Colby’s minimal application requirements and great aid, as compared to WashU (just to take one example) adding a supplemental essay this year, and experiencing a 19% decline in apps (which I am sure they expected).

Thanks @Andrew2199 I guess the best way to find these numbers is to go on the colleges newspapers. neither Oberlin nor Kenyon seem to making any announcements about this as of yet, just lots of actual campus news! Imagine that!

Colby has seen a truly remarkable drop. Here are some others with big changes downwards of one-third or so in admission rates compared to 3 years ago.

Rice 8.73% from 15.3% in 2015-16,
Bowdoin 8.9% from 14.8%,
USC 11% from 16.6%,
Barnard 11.3% from 16.7%,
Tulane 13% from 25.5%,
Emory 15% from 25.3%,
NYU 16% from 31.9%,
Hamilton 15% from 26.1%,
BU 18.1% from 29.4%,
Northeastern perhaps as well.

@mochi12 @jin2000 @OHMomof2 one can add

Johns Hopkins ED+RD: 2,950 out of 32,231 (9.2%),
Hamilton ED1+ED2+RD: ~1,334 out of 8,338 (16%),
Haverford ED1+ED2+RD: 801 out of 4,968 (16.1%),
Wellesley ED1+ED2+RD: ~1,298 out of 6,488 (20%),
Boston College EA+RD: ~9,500 out of 35,556 (26.7%),
Florida - main campus RD: 14,136 out of 41,407 (34.1%),
GWU ED1+ED2+RD: ~11,000 out of 27,071 (40.6%),
Georgia EA+RD: 13,050 out of 29,314 (44.5%)

If Vanderbilt received the same number of ED1+ED2 apps as last year, i.e., 4,140, then the Vanderbilt ED1+ED2+RD number would be ~2908 from 37,107 (7.8%) - with the 4,140 assumption in mind.

Also, Stanford announced 2,057 admits recently but did not give any further details.

^You should remove Vanderbilt as you are comparing apples and oranges. Vandy is only showing their RD round at 6.3. Total is likely at least 1-2 % higher. By example Brown was 4.8% RD but 6.6% total. Vandy doesn’t report both and excludes ed rounds in calculation. All other schools are listing totals.

I would gladly and eagerly attend every single one of these colleges and universities.

Complain all we want, but what a wonderful spectrum of opportunity we have in the USA.

Wow is all I can say.

Likely tighter than that. The most recent CDS (2016-2017) shows 1,488 accepted.

http://web.grinnell.edu/institutionalresearch/webdocs/GC_CDS_1617.pdf

1,488 out of 7,961 would be approximately 18.7%

@Andrew2199 The number of accepted fluctuates. The 1600 level is pretty consistent with other years. Usually based on overenrollemnt and yield data year to year.

But it’s not the 18 or 21 percent rate that means much. Most intesting to note for how competitive things have become. In 2011 Grinell had just over 3000 applications for the same number of seats. Same basic awesome school and but was 40 percent plus admit rate 8 years ago. Crazy really.

Grinnell has fluctuated a lot. Following the 18.7% year, it was 28.9% (1689/5850) - this is in the latest CDS out from Grinnell. Last year, I believe I saw a 24% admit rate.

@Andrew2199: I used IPEDS as a source for Grinnell (1696 accepted), which appears to provide more recent information than the CDS in its case.

@merc81 where is the source of the Colgate and Grinnell numbers you have posted? Would you mind posting the link to this year’s announcements?

Anyone have Wesleyan, Oberlin, Kenyon?

And Davidson?

Mount Holyoke? Bates?

@citivas and @JanieWalker This is for people who access the info for a particular school and post it here. A communal effort. No one and especially OP aren’t researching all of the schools. They are just curating the list.
