Hello! I have posted threads about chances me’s! But now I need some advice! I have narrowed down my college opportunities and have made some options. If you would like to help me please choose the following options and explain why?
Accepted
Texas Tech
Colorado Boulder
A&M PSA (have to explain)
Awaiting UT (Want CAP)
Option 1- I got PSA from Texas A&M but PSA only have specific majors to choose from. I want to pursue a Chemical Engineering degree. A&M PSA doesn’t have it on there, I was thinking Computer Engineering (which is included) but it’s not my passion. I will do it if the A&M degree is worth it. (Heard a lot of good things about the Aggie network)
Option 2- UT CAP program is something I might be more interested than anything on the list. I visited and love UT but in the CAP program you have to apply for you intended major. My one problem is if I’m not that competitive for it. Do they only consider you your one year at the UT system? If so I would bust my butt to get in the engineering department. I have done lots of APs in high school but UT is extremely competitive when it comes to engineering. Which means I don’t want to be a sophomore accepted to UT but doing a major I wouldn’t like pursuing.
Option 3- Go to Texas Tech. I have been admitted to chemical engineering, but it’s not my number one choice.
Option 4- Colorado Boulder, I have been admitted to the college of applied arts and science. I haven’t been accepted to the engineering department but after a year of being in the applied arts college, I can transfer to engineering. They gave me a lot of scholarship help and already gave me my rough estimate of $43,000+. Which is a lot, I have money saved but not enough for Boulder, I would come out maybe being around 50,000-60,000 in debt which isn’t great at all. But again I heard a lot about to CU-Boulder degree being worth its money even with Out of State tuition.
Option 5- Go to a nearby community college and transfer to UT ( if I don’t get CAP). Which is more work but I believe I can manage. Plus I save money during the process.
Thanks so much for reading. Be as truthful as you can and thanks for giving me some advice!
What is the net cost of each (not including loans)?
@“Erin’s Dad” sorry for the bump and I am well preped on money for Texas universities for all 4 years. But CU-Boulder OOS pay is very expensive.
Bump
What are your net costs at each? Can your parents pay them? I think you’re better off at a college that admits you directly into the major you want, but not if you have to borrow $50k to go there.
I just wouldn’t waste time and effort and money trying and hoping you could transfer into UT or A&M main campus. It’s a struggle that not a lot of people actually complete.
Go to Texas Tech and make it work. You are accepted there into your major and on the main campus.
@austinmshauri Thank a lot for responding! Also yes my parents can afford four years to any Texas college but for CU-Boulder being Out of State tuition is just absolutely insane!
@carachel2 Are you familiar with the PSA and CAP? If so I would have some questions to ask.
@Johnnieboy50 --no, I’m not familiar with either of them enough to guide you specifically.
We know graduates of Texas Tech and they loved the school. As a parent, I would just encourage my kid to go where they are wanted, accepted into their program and it is affordable. Too many unknowns in a system where you have to try to transfer in. I know some do…but honestly chemical engineering is going to be so insanely competitive at UT. The odds are stacked against you before you start.
Hopefully someone who has done CAP can help you out!
@carachel2 Thanks a lot, those are extremely motivative words!
Texas Tech engineer grads land great jobs and Tech has the full college experience. You can afford it, you are accepted…go for it! You will thrive.
CAP’ed students are typically only offered Liberal Arts or less competitive majors, never Engineering.
And TAMU PSA won’t let you into the major you want (and the system doesn’t guarantee you’ll get to TAMU College Station, as many students fail to meet their grade thresholds.)
Your best options are Texas Tech… or look for a university still accepting applications and offering Chemical Engineering, apply there, and wait for their answer (in the meanwhile, deposit for housing at Texas Tech).
