Hey I was wondering how far back college applications expect you to go. For example, under "work experience" do they want you to put only the work experience you've had in high school, or throughout your whole life? Same for awards--just from your high school career, or your whole life?

Just high school.

Generally HS, I think, but if you have an unbroken line of many years of an EC, I might think you'd mention it. I believe my son mentioned 6 years of tap dancing because that's unusual for a guy and shows sustained interest.

If you've got something really cool from before (made State Fair team for my public speaking in 4H when I was 11, etc) then that's significant. Not many people do have work experience from before high school, so that could be a good thing too -- but I think you'd have make sure it didn't sound too juvenile.

High school is what they seek, but I concur. Anything truly significant. Daughter danced 14 years and soccer for another 10, so was listed. Although numerous academic and leadership roles in middle school, she elected not to list them.

k so i probably wont put any awards and leadership roles from middle school.

but is putting i had a paper route from 4th-5th grade (1999-2001) that took about 1 hr per day, 6 days per week under work experience ok?

I would not include the paper route as work experience, unless it continued through high school.

Now, if you choose to write about a related topic and want to go into some experience that you had on the route, you could do that. But not because it's important to note that you had the paper route; only do it if it strengthens your essay.
