College Application Requirment Question

So in 8th grade i took Algebra I. Which is a course needed to apply to colleges and to graduate high school. First three quarters i did alright with Bs and a C. The last quarter however i just got lazy.

Pretty stupid mistake as i got a D that quarter.

In order to get into Geometry in 9th grade you need a C average or better. i got into Geometry freshman year. Passed that no problem and am currently in Algebra II/Trigonometry as a sophomore with a decent grade. A B-.

In the beginning of the year our counselors came and gave us our transcripts with course details and grades. For some reason my Algebra I grade from 8th grade was on there as was everyone else who took Algebra I in 8th grade. Our counselor said that they shouldnt have been on there or something i have no clue. but they have been for the past two years.

So anyway the grade on there was my D+. Naturally i wasangry because that was just one quarter of poor effort. I didnt want a D+ showing up on my transcript. Sure i got a D but still. Its the same as a kid getting a D in the third quarter but then gearing up and getting a C+ the fourth quarter and having the C being the grade on the transcript with the D no where in sight.

Ive was looking at some college sites and **** and it says that in order to apply you mustve taken certain classes blah blah blah and passed them with a C- or better. Algebra was one of these requirements. Even though i thought i passed with a C- or better the grade for Algebra I on my transcript is a D.
Does this mean i wont be able to apply to colleges and **** without retaking algebra I?

Please help.

Heres some other stuff i was confused about
My counselor said that if i get a B- or better in Algebra II/Trig, it will somehow make up for the D in algebra I because i have shown that i mastered algebra. Ive never heard that before and i cant find anything on it. I need to talk to my counselor again about it. Has anyone heard of that?

Thanks for your time

I also took Algebra in 8th grade. However, my school does not record any marks, officially, prior to 9th grade on the transcript. Based on the fact that I went on to Geometry the following year, it is assumed I passed Algebra I. My school does list mandatory classes on the transcript, but there are no marks for those courses, again, because they came before high school. It could be different for your high school though…

Well I took Alg in 7th grade, and Geo in 8th… and neither are on my transcript. Although, I’m pretty sure the admission office would be smart enough to recognize that your average would have been a C if it wasn’t quarter based. Besides that, since it doesn’t fall in the four year of high school category, they will probably not even take it as consideration. After all, Alg is not a requirement for college admission, geometry is, and since Alg is required before taking geometry, that would be only reason to think of alg as a requirement. For me, it doesn’t show that I took geometry at all, but since I took Alg II honors in my freshman year, pre calculus over the summer, and now I’m taking AP Calc AB as a sophomore… they really won’t care when or if I took geometry. Same thing will go with you.

Your Alg 1 is included because its a hs course.
It is surprising they put you in Geo if your Alg 1 was so low.
Be that as it may, now in Alg2 you “demonstrate” ability by doing well in that course.

I would think any AdComm would expect to see you to bring that up to a B+ at least to show you aren’t making simple mistakes etc…there is lots of math beyond Alg 2.

Each school shows info on transcripts a little differently–some with only final grades–some with semester and final exams grades and year end grades etc. You cannot change their policy.

Your school is reporting the grades you earned.
