ETS just sent out an email this morning, the affected sections won’t be graded. Does that mean they will take into account the experimental sections when grading?
The SAT is ostensibly a measure of our intelligence, but it seems to me that it’s a more accurate measure of College Board’s incompetence.
Don’t even bother calling their customer support and complaining to them; I’m sure they’ve coached their call representatives on how to deal with this situation; they all get standard scripts to use when dealing with callers, so it’s not likely for them to provide us with concrete answers.
MY SOLUTION: provide everyone who took the test that day a free retake sometime within the next few months (and not in October) as well as with a refund for this mishap; some people planned to take the Subject tests during the Fall, but now they can’t if they want to retake the SAT (which they likely will need to, since colleges will not want to accept spurious scores).
I dunno. I didn’t have an experimental section for some reason (maybe because it was testing with accomodations?), I only had 9 sections and my 9th section was Writing…
what is going to happen? if 8 and 9 is omitted, wont 1 wrong now equal like 4-5 wrong?
I just emailed a couple of the colleges that my son may apply to. I ask them if they would be treating the June SAT scores the same or if my son should retake the test to validate his scores…
what did they say?
I just got a response back from one of them. They are going to take a wait and see approach before deciding.
I am sure that all colleges will state shortly that they will consider the scores to be accurate. Can you imagine the public relations nightmare that would ensue if a college stated they won’t count those scores?
Colleges use these test to admit students. So if they don’t think the scores will hold up compared to other ones then yes I could see some of them saying we want another SAT or ACT to validate your scores. Most likely the more selective ones.
I think the JUNE 6th SAT scores will always have a stigma attached to it. This is why I think there should be the option for a retake. Why do we have to take the burden for a CB mistake?
Maybe this was answered before or not, I’m not sure, but I took the SAT in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Europe… Does this error and the consequences that come with, apply to me aswell? On the Collegeboard site, it says it speaks of “affecting all test takers on june 6th in the US”… That’s why I’m asking.
Thanks!
^ Only US students are affected.
A painful lesson learned from this situation is: life isn’t always fair.
Someone at College Board is responsible for a big mistake, and should be held accountable.
My son is affected by this, as he was taking the June 6th SAT for the final time, with plans to take 2 subject tests in October.
I hope someone from College Board reading this discussion. Students who took the SAT on June 6th, should be offered the opportunity to retest for free in September. The only way to make it fair to the students affected would be to have a September SAT only open to those who took the June 6th test. It would make no sense to open a re-test to anyone other than the students directly affected. A special retest in September would allow the affected students an opportunity to test in October for the SAT or subject tests.
I’d like to encourage everyone to write an email to the College Board, sat@info.collegeboard.org
I asked for a refund, an additional test date free-of-charge, and the June 3 score to cover all the bases. I’ll let everyone know if I get a response.
I posted this in the other giant thread:
I’ve been following CB’s twitter account, and today their responses to some tweets are different than yesterday’s tweets.
Someone tweeted earlier today: “Will both sections 8 and 9 be unscored for everyone or will it be specific to only the single section that had 25 minutes?”
CB tweeted back: “It will either be section 8 or 9, depending on the edition.”
It looks like CB is going to throw out just ONE section, not both, depending on which test booklet you got. At least that’s my interpretation.
Whoa, hold up a bit I totally understand everyone wanting a retest, or do-over, but for us that’s not an option. My daughter will be attending college in the fall. The decisions have already been made based on previous SAT scores. The issue that I’m having is that she took this June 6th test in the hopes of increasing her score to qualify for Florida’s Bright Futures Scholarship. This is the final date that they will accept a score.
I just spoke to a friend that is a college admissions dean and she says they are fully aware of the situation and if CB says they have enough scoring information to provide to them that is what they will accept.
I also spoke to Bright Futures and they said they would take whatever score the “high school” provides them with. I believe they receive scores through each district’s system. Lol, my daughter is home schooled, so hopefully that isn’t a different fly in the ointment
Anyway, I just hope the scores are accepted, fair and accurate.
I just asked my son he said BOTH sections 8 & 9 were printed with 25 minutes…So I hope college board knows that. I have tweeted it to them…
@msdarcy The statement issued by the College Board yesterday was ambiguous. They kept referring to “affected” sections without defining what “affected” actually meant. If they aren’t scoring both for everyone, they should just come out and say “we will not be scoring sections 8 and 9 on all domestic US tests taken June 6th.”
@MidwestDad3 I agree that they have been ambiguous. I’m sure that was on purpose. CB’s official response from today’s Twitter feed - “It will EITHER be section 8 or 9, depending on the edition.” (emphasis mine)
This is so unfair for most students. CB is an organization who receives tons of money each year. They can’t stop cheating and now this. I hope the future of those who took this test can be impaired.
