College Board Error on June 6, 2015 SAT?

Our proctor was smart enough to realize that the college board made a mistake with 25 minutes, so we all had 20 minutes (the right amount of time).

This is very unfair to a lot of people, and I get that they are doing their best to work it out.

This is a rough estimate, but seems about right…

First math section: 15/18 -three wrong on the fill ins with no a,b,c,d, or e… (so wrong answers don’t effect my score.)

Second math: 16/20 with about 4 blank, hopefully no wrong lol

But the Section 8 math: 14/16 No wrong…

Will this have a big impact if they cancel section 8, because it can still benefit some people and be unfair to others…

On a test that was already compromised, the CB is creating further “standardization” problems with their Twitter post which says that only 1 section will be thrown out. If this is, in fact, math for some and reading for others, adequate comparisons cannot be made - even if it’s only between students who sat for the June 6 test. Also, didn’t some of the kids get extra time on both sections even though only one reflected a misprint? There is no way for CB to know that. Both sections should be thrown out for all.

@luvmygirls

I called Collegeboard for more info. The Supv first said that only one section would be thrown out. After I told him I got an email that said both sections would be thrown out he admitted that two sections would be thrown out. I think what they are going to do is substitute the experimental section for one section and then throw out the other section. In effect, this is throwing out both sections and then substituting for one of them.

If this is what they do, the question then would be- did everyone get the same experimental section? Because obviously this is going to be not at all standardized if different people received different experimental sections.

Thanks for that info- sounds like the people there have no idea what is going on. When did you call?
Also, there is definitely no way they will use the experimental section for scoring purposes. Those questions are only in the “testing” phase. Also, everyone’s experimental section was different and there were several different forms of each.

I don’t think so. CB never gives same experimental section. Each student should have received one from math, critical reading, or writing.
From CB’s website:
Each SAT exam includes an extra 25-minute critical reading, mathematics or writing multiple-choice section that doesn’t count toward your score.

This section is where we try out new questions to make sure that future exams are fair for students from different backgrounds. It also helps us make sure that scores from students taking future exams can be compared to scores from students who took earlier versions of the test.

I will throw out what I think they should do. I am sure many will disagree… but here it goes. I don’t think that anyone should be harmed by their mistake. To make reparations, I think they should count or not count section 8 and/or 9 according to whether it will help the individual student’s score or not.

However, this still would not help those test takers who did extensive preparation and could have achieved a perfect or near perfect score without the glitches that might throw them off.

CB just updated their statement (The ambiguity was removed and it is now confirmed that both sections will be deleted):

“The time allotted for the last reading section was incorrect in the student test books but correct in the script and manual provided to test center supervisors. The copy in the student test books indicated “25 minutes” while the manual and script indicated the correct time limit of “20 minutes.” Because of the way the SAT is administered, while the misprint appeared in the last reading section, students may have been taking the last math section in the same room at the same time, and also would be affected.”

“After a comprehensive review and statistical analysis, the College Board and ETS have determined that the last reading and last math sections will not be scored”

I am actually very worried that my score for this month will be substatially lower than the one I received prior (which wasn’t that high either.) I am really stressed out about this right now and I’m not really sure how I could wait for 2 weeks.

@scnc123 Great idea! I like it.

Its disgusting that this happened…They can’t conduct an exam that they have conducted million times properly! And they expect students to be perfect…Top colleges expect you to have 800/800 in Math!..My sympathies lie with all the anxious parents and students that this issue is causing. Anyway you look at it, it’s not fair!!

I emailed college board (good luck, I know, I still haven’t heard back from my Saturday email-- so much for 48 hours) and suggested they offer a free, optional test on June 20 in addition to providing the scores to students who took the June 6 test. If they are so sure the scores from the 6th are valid, they should put their money where their mouths are and let the students confirm it for themselves. My concern is that colleges may look at this date differently, and there are many students who can’t take it in October and will then be too late. I don’t love the idea of a late summer/September date because my daughter has already prepared, and asking her to keep preparing all summer long after junior year is just plain mean…

Both my S and I emailed collegeboard this morning addressing our dissatisfaction with the way in which they were handling the situation. Of course all we received in reply was a generic response telling us to go call their customer service line. Of course when we called this line they again gave the generic answer that their method of scoring would not impact the scores. I even asked to speak to a supervisor, the the representative told me that he would give me the same generic answer as well. Collegeboard clearly does not care about what the people think, they are unwilling to take suggestions and do something about the matter. On page 18 there is a link to sign a petition regarding a better solution to this problem, and I encourage everyone to sign that. It seems that there are few other ways to make ourselves actually heard.

Ok so I did not receive an email regarding this. A friend forwarded me the email her daughter received and both our daughters took June 6 at same location. My daughter said she got 20 minutes and no one questioned it. However, I’m concerned that I wasn’t notified at all. This was suppose to be daughters last time taking.

And also this is my last chance to take it :(((

Any word on a potential retake?

@sjms71 - The email would go to the email account that you set up when you registered the account with college board.

Thanks, we never got an email at registered account email.

Did you get any emails from them before the test?

Yes the last email she got was last Tuesday and was to print admission ticket if needed. Checked all folders too just in case. Not sure why we didn’t get an email. I guess I need to call.

GUYS on the official College Board twitter they say EITHER section 8 or 9 will be unscored, depending on your edition of the test.

NOT both sections as some of you believe
