DD went up in every subject from a 2030 to a 2170…
@ Chrysanthemum14
I do understand that it has three sections.Math is hardest for her - it just takes time to warm up so she does poorly on the first section, average on the 2nd and well on the third. The third was dropped, so no matter if the content was the same, for her, the mistake and the altered grading lowered her score. The reverse would be true for a student who gets tired and performs worse as the test continues - they would do better if the later sections were dropped. Point being, it doesn’t matter if my daughter psyches herself out (but thanks for the psycho analysis). The test needs to be consistent and fair for everyone applying in any given admissions cycle. And the College Board failed to do that for the 400,000+ kids on June 6.
My son was very upset this morning. He went down (just a little) in his math and he was expecting to pretty much ace that. He said the last math section when he was finished taking it, he aced and thought he pretty much scored perfect on that. He took honors pre-cal, honors physics, etc. this past Junior year and was really mad when he got his scores. This whole thing is messed up. His proctors gave them the right instructions; he only had 20 mins. to take those sections because the proctors did their jobs, so for the CB to just throw out 2 entire sections and claim it doesn’t make a difference is just a bunch of crap. Sorry I was dealing with a very upset son this am. So, now he will take it again (for a 3rd time) in October during football season his senior year so on top of being stressed out about football because he is being recruited by schools, he has to deal with taking this test again, on a Saturday after a Friday night game. He shouldn’t have had to and that’s the reason he took them this past year. The CB needs to be held accountable and maybe some day schools will finally stop counting on these standardized tests. He is a straight A student taking all honors and AP classes and this is just really messed up. Sorry for the ranting; I’m just really mad.
Does anyone think college board will give a few extra points to the Math or CR sections? It seems as if everyone’s score went down
They need to add a few points. We got screwed!
Yes, sounds like most kids did worse on this test than the last one they took or what they expected to get. My child certainly did worse than was expected! It’s not right. Don’t know what we can do about it though, if anything. The CB certainly doesn’t care and thinks because they are giving a free re-test on Oct 3 that somehow makes up for this mess. It does not. Kids shouldn’t have to re-take it again, but I don’t know any other option.
My DD’s scores changed as follows: M + 80, R - 60, W +60.
I hope people aren’t concluding that most scores went down based on postings here and elsewhere. People are much more likely to post if they are upset. Everyone whose scores went up are just out celebrating. FWIW, D thought she did well and her scores went up by 160 total. Her score on this test was almost identical to the score on the ACT that she took one week later. It seems about right to me.
@me29034 Same here! My score went up about 230 points on this SAT, and my ACT I took a week later (with no prep) was a tad bit higher.
However, I would not mind them adding a few points on.
@me29034 People aren’t saying that all scores were negatively affected. Obviously, some were positively affected. If a student got 0 wrong answers in the first two sections, but missed an answer or two in the third, then by throwing that score out, their scores would be positively affected and reflect an 800 when they really might have only gotten a 760 if the third section was scored. What we are saying it that the CB needs to acknowledge that scores were affected. I for one would like to know what their definition of “reliable” is.
My son’s CR score went down by 70 points! He had scored a 750 in January and in March on actual SATs. He has not ever scored under 700 on any of his practice tests (official CB practice tests and he’s taken about 9 of them!) and he was better prepared for this test than he had been for any other. His math tutor was flabbergasted that he got a 680 in CR because in helping him with his math, he also looked at all of his other practice test scores.
This score is completely inconsistent with any other score he has gotten. And this was his 3rd time taking an SAT. He wasn’t nervous, he wasn’t distracted, he didn’t get sick, he was in the same place he’d taken it before. The only variable was the way it was scored. I’m tired of people just ignoring the data in favor of thinking that some of us are just upset that our precious little snowflakes bombed this big bad ugly test. The numbers need to be analyzed and the CB is the one who needs to do it to prove their claims that these scores are “reliable”. (Notice they said “reliable” not “accurate”!)
@WaltazingM I TOTALLY agree!! My son came home the day of the test positive he did much better in his math and his comprehension. He ended his junior year with a 4.67, straight A’s which included honors pre-calc and honors physics and 6 classes total all honors and AP courses. He told me the last math section he felt he got 100% and for that to NOT be counted could and most surely impacted his math score if he did do that well as he thought he did. Also, if a child didn’t do so well on those two sections for whatever reason, of course that will also make a difference. There is no way this is reliable testing completely cutting our and not counting 1/3 of a portion of their tests! Now my son gets to stress over re-taking it for a 3rd time during his senior year and football. It’s just NOT RIGHT! He should be enjoying his senior year, not stressing over a messed up SAT exam.
We were disappointed, but knew we would be. On every SAT (practice and actual – yes, we got the booklet and answers from college board to confirm it) my kid had trouble with the first 2 sections. It takes her that long to settle in. This test was no different. Her math and reading scores went down over 100 points each and (the unaffected) writing stayed exactly the same as it had on the last 2 tests. We are definitely out of the norm for the stats. This test may be statistically similar for the general population, but certainly not equivalent for our situation. I knew I shouldn’t have listened to the well meaning guidance counselor who thought the curve might be helpful who said don’t do anything yet, and just cancelled the scores like I wanted to originally. Bummer. I feel bad for my daughter. Luckily her ACT’s are fine, and all we did was line College Board’s pockets some more. I’m worried about the few schools that require all scores from completed tests, but there really isn’t anything we can do. I don’t want to get over dramatic, but I wonder how admins will view that. You can’t help but feel bad for your kid who worked so hard and have what they view as their success taken away potentially by a corporate oops.
This test from my previous one: +130 CR + 50M -110 W
I went down in the only section unaffected lol.
My distribution was: +80 CR +70 M +70 W.
And this final score perfectly aligns with my ACT so it was reliable for me.
@BCSurvivorMom I’m so sorry for your son’s situation. My heart just breaks for those who were really counting on this test. My son, as disappointed as he is with these scores, already has the scores the needed. He was hoping for better as a personal challenge and because we had already signed up and couldn’t get our money back anyway. He has decided to take the October test since they waived the fee and he wants to prove to himself and CB that these scores are NOT “reliable”. I told him he didn’t have to but he said, “No way am I letting this go.” I have to admit, I was kind of proud of him. And I’m still hoping for someone to use his scores and the scores of other kids who took it before and after and through statistical analysis, prove that in the future, they can’t just throw out a couple of sections and call it “reliable”.
@Chrysanthemum14 My son’s scores do not align with his ACT score at all. His composite score is at least 120 points off and about 90 points off for just his CR & M. His March scores were much closer to the ACT conversion.
@WaltzingM thank you very much! My son’s first scores in March were pretty good considering he didn’t study or prep in any way and yes, like your son wanted to improve, especially in math. He is looking at engineering or computer’s for his major so that score really makes a difference. It is upsetting to see you child disappointed and upset like he was this am after getting his scores. He is not an emotional child and pretty even tempered all of the time so to see him upset made me realize even more how messed up this is. I am still getting emails from the CB trying to explain themselves and how the test is still accurate blah blah blah! It’ nonsense and I am hopeful his Oct test scores show that too. He told me he wanted to take it again so I signed him up for Oct. I should be interesting for sure.
My scores went down. CR went down 20 points and Math went down 50, but my writing went up 40. On sll the practices tests, I was scoring 500-520 on math, 5550-620 on reading, and 570-590 in writing.
CR 700
M 760
Wr 690 (10 Essay)
From the last test:
CR +100
M +110
Wr -10
I superscore with Wr 700 to a 2160. Probably will take again though.
So this test really worked out for me since i went up a full 200 points. I was also mostly suprised that I got a 10 on the essay too. I got a 10 on my first SAT (600/650/700), but I thought the second essay I wrote for my second SAT was much worse than my first.
International students were affected, too. The last sections were not scores, which were the easiest ones. They only have one system and this scores internationally, not only for U.S students…
