Okay, so at my school, I am known as "First Middle Last", while legally (on my SSN and Birth Certificate) I'm known as "First Middle Last#1 Last#2", meaning that I have two last names (non hyphenated).

So when I signed up for anything that has to do with the College Board, I signed up with the name that my school has me by. When applying to a UC, should I keep it the way the school has me or go through the whole hassle now (by now I mean when the school year starts in August because school is now closed) and correct everything?

Also, when applying to a UC is there some section where I can write down another last name I used during high school? If so, would that alternative be recommended or should I just change it with CB and my high school?

Hopefully, the SSN should help clear everything up. My D had a similar situation, and was known K-8 as “First Middle Last#2”. Then, the HS had her down as “First Middle Last#1 Last#2” because we had to present the BC to register. I had the records changed to what she had been using – but by then, she had become accustomed to what the attendance records said!!! That meant I had to change it back, and of course the full last name does not fit on all the forms or even on the school ID card. I think it is better to go with the name on the BC, passport, and DL to prevent confusion when signing in for standardized tests. Also, you do not want applications and supporting documents to go astray. JMHO.

Chances are that the administrative offices of your school are open part of this summer. Pick up the phone and call them, and straighten this out before school starts. You want your final transcript and your diploma to have your full legal name on them.

I totally understand your situation. I know of lots of people with this situation, so when Happykid was born in Venezuela, I made sure to put a hyphen between the two last names when I registered her at the US consulate. Her Venezuelan documents show the double (no hyphen) last name, and her US documents have the hyphenated version.

Oh okay so I guess what I want to do is get this straightened out with the College Board AND my school before school actually starts then. I’ll see what happens, but if worst comes to worst something happens and I can’t, what should I do?

And thanks for the replies, I feel a little more relieved knowing I can do something about this.

It may take a bit of time, but it will all be sorted out eventually. Until it is, keep using the name you’ve been using for the CB for all your business with them, and the name you’ve been using for your school for your business with your school. That way their individual sets of information will stay together.

Oh just to clarify, the name used with CB and at my school are the same, it’s just that they’re different from my legal last name (by different I mean just missing the second last name).

UC schools probably have seen the multiple surname situation plenty of times, given the number of Latinos in California.

Update: I managed to change my last name on my CollegeBoard account, which apparently, only takes care of the SAT/SATII. I asked if this would mean that my last name was changed on my other SAT/SATII’s, and she said that she doesn’t know. Would anyone like to clarify this for me? And if not should I resend my scores now that my name is updated.
