College Board, Test Company Sued Over SAT

Before you switch to the ACT, you need to check out who does their scoring.

I just want to agree with the fact that people underestimate the importance of the SAT.
I am a high school senior, salutatorian of a class of 600, president of national honor society 4 year varsity in two sports, work a job, involved in multiple other clubs and competitions. My school however does not have any preparation for the application process so I was completely blind going in knowing a thing. I kept hearing how SATs are not going to hold a qualified applicant back from anything. I didn't take any fancy prep courses or any for that matter. I did not really feel the need to prepare either because I figured if I spent months preparing it would only improve my score maybe 100 which I didn't think would make much of a difference anyway. I received a 1330 on the Old scale. I scored solid SAT II's with a 790 in Bio. I thought was a stretch for an Ivy so I applied only to the one I liked UPenn. I also applied Johns Hopkins and the University of Pittsburgh along with 2 other safety schools. I was waitlisted at both UPenn and Johns Hopkins, which may or may not have been just SAT related. The importance of the SAT scores became extremely apparent with Pittsburgh. I received no aid from them and did not qualify for any scholarship. When I asked why, they responded, had you received a 1400 you would have received a full tuition scholarship. So those few points on that stupid test can mean a lot to people whether its admission to a more selective school or in my case around 50 thousand dollars in scholarship. So in a way I am glad CB is being suid becaus eit can have a huge impact on people more than you'd think.

CB deserves it...
If they were nonprofit I would feel at least a little sympathy for them...

Sorry But If Any One Saw That Post It Was My Annoying Little Sister Sent It.
~sorry, Annoying Siblings.........

Well, the SAT scores have been delayed for at least a week (moved from the 17th to the 24th), so obviously CB is trying harder to not screw up like last time.

And just in case no one has heard, CB has claimed that the moisture in the air (it was raining) had seeped into the test papers, thereby making them expand, which made them not fit up correctly with the automated test-checking machines. shrug

Iam 12 years old and when can you do the SAT test because in Grade 11 it heavily retributified. The Sactified SACIL test is hard to do because the Gazelles will win the Eisner test and Bachus. I'm gat git yondo becau dills numero twa fullum as begy boon doo. The tam wolof folof dolof as the hummo nujov, by the way my name is GERONIMO JACKSAG LOPEZ!

ummm sonbac you are 12 years old
i think you need to re-evaluate your priorities...focus on being a kid and worry about sats when you are 17

Clearly no lawyers in the group.

College Board probably is to blame for messing up the scoring on the test, right? So CB should have to refund the money of all of the people who were harmed by their mistake.

However, your failure to get into Harvard is not the direct fault of CB.

Take this example.

Let's say I have a big presentation in front of Google next Monday.

I buy a new projector to show my graphs and tables to the Board of Directors.

The presentation could mean a billion dollar contract.

However, my projector breaks in the middle of the presentation and I lose the contract.

I should rightfully demand my $400 back for the projector, but can I really sue the projector manufactorer for 1 BILLION dollars? Heck no.

Take this other example.

My father bought a van back in 1997.

He was driving through Kentucky the next year when it broke down. He had to leave the van at a repair shop for 2 days in some random town near the border with Ohio. He had to take a plane back to Boston and get a rental car down to Kentucky to pick the car up when it was fixed.

Naturally, General Motors paid for the repairs to the car. The van was under warrenty and GM had a legal obligation to pay for defects in its product.

But when my dad asked for GM to pay him for the plane ticket he was forced to buy, they laughed and said, "It's not our fault you were driving in Kentucky."

Well, they didn't actually laugh at him. But you get the point.

College Board will probably have to refund all of the money it recieved from people to score their faulty tests. However, no jury (except perhaps in Mississippi) would ever award the test takers money for "emotional harm" or "consequential damages".

It is not College Board's fault that you waited untill October to take the test. If you had taken the test in April, May, and retaken them June, it wouldn't have been a problem.

I pity these poor kids, but they don't have a leg to stand on legally.

CB is an arrogant, money hungry MONOPOLY. There are no controls & they aren't accountable to anyone.

I find it scary that we have no idea how many other times tests were incorrectly scored. If we are to believe their lame humidity excuse - that's a valid concern. I'm sure it's rained many other SAT days.

What I'd like to know: during the last 5 or 10 years, what percent of the tests that CB rescored( for $50) had score changes?

Another scary thought: if those 2 students hadn't paid the $50 for rescoring, THIS NEVER WOULD HAVE RESURFACED.

I agree with venom; unfortunately the sats are incredibly important. As venom says, an applicant who would get no money with one score could get up to 150,000 in scholarships if that person's score goes up 50 points. Ditto getting into prestigious schools. A 4.0 student in the most rigorous school in the country will still not get into most prestigious schools if their sats are not very high. SATs carry enormous weight unfortunately; there should at least be excellent proofing systems for possible errors. . .though the whole concept of a test is a kind of error in itself.

totally agreed. I find it extremely difficult to believe they consider themselves to be NONPROFIT, that is just ridiculous.

how do you find out if they scored you incorrectly? I thought you just got a letter back with the final score, not all the individual answers.

College Board is not a monopoly. It does not engage in anticompetitive behavior and there is a well known alternative product, the ACT.

College Board is non-profit. Non-profit does not equal charity. College Board does not puport to be a charity. Non-profit status is determined by the tax code and accounting practices. It has nothing to do with the amount of revenue the non-profit generates.

ILOVECC2: Does the ACT have subject tests, comprable to the SAT IIs? To my knowledge, they don't.

Regarding their mess up with the Oct scoring, if they're really a "Standardized" test, they would have decreased the scores that were given scores that were too high in addition to raising the scores that were reported too low. The reason they didn't do that, was after kids applied to college & were accepted, they were fearful that the backlash from lowering scores would be even worse than the law suits from raising scores.

Any other test date, if you ask for hand scoring (for $50), you are told upfront there's a chance your score could go down.

...okay...the new SAT...raised its test fee...and CB's explanation was that...they had to pay for the "essay graders"..now CB is planning to "scan the test twice" which can mean...the fee might go up more...and if ppls sue...the fee might "jump"......here...the problem is not about rather to sue or not...but the problem is what will happen after the sue....such as what would happen to future test takers who have the same dream as Oct. test takers??...an related example is...McDonald's coffee price...it "jumped" b/c someone sued them over "spilling the coffee" on one's self...im not saying...CB sue is stupid b/c i understand that Oct. test takers are hurt greatly...and i would be too...but sometimes...we gatta take a step back...and think...will it affect others in a bad way??...such as ppls who have hard time financially and cant pay $50 right off the bat...........

??...such as ppls who have hard time financially and cant pay $50 right off the bat

It's ludicrous that CB charges to have a test rescored. It's assumed that when you take the SAT the score you receive is an accurate score (excluding the essay portion, which is subjective). The $50 is a deterrent to many who can't afford the additional fee. EVERYONE deserves an accurate score.

CB's response to have the tests scanned twice is comical. First of all, how will we know if they do so. More importantly, if the same company that couldn't scan correctly the 1st time is rescanning, it's a total waste. OUTSIDE CONTROLS ARE NEEDED TO ENSURE ACCURACY.

I'm sure that in the past 10 years very few paid for rescoring, for financial reasons & the fear that the scores could be lowered. I still wonder what percent of tests that have been rescanned had scores changed. This is something we'll never know, but might reveal that the problem has been far mroe wide spread than the Oct '05 test.

Kudos to the kid filing the lawsuit. CB had it coming to them.

I honestly thought about have my October scores hand-scored, however I figured they would never make a mistake and it would be a waste of $50.

That being said, I have no idea what happened to my scores. I took the test in March '05, May '05, and then again in October. My scores from October were very upsetting- in the middle and low 500/600s for math and CR. However my writing was high in the 700s so I figured it couldn't be wrong.

Anyways, I guess it wasn't a mistake since I was never notified. I quickly signed up for the December test after receiving the October scores, and did much better- high 600/700s like they had been in May. So yeah, the whole thing is totally messed up and needless to say, I don't really trust the system at all.

They are thieves out there in Princeton - thieves.

I disagree with any body who's for any lawsuit against Cb.I think it was a mistake as the rightly acknowledge that, however I think it is abit opportunistic for anyone to try to sue them for an honest mistake. The only problem iI have with CB is the fact that they pushed the April 1rst test scores for one week without pushing the deadline for the June test one with back too.

MomOfTwoTeens, your ignorance regarding the business world is really appalling. Read a book or something.
