One of the universities I applied to called me today. They told me that the heard I was interested in applying there and gave me some info about their college. Is it common to get phone calls from colleges and will phone call harm my chances in any way (like the way I answered the person's questions)

Probably a prank call.

No, if they take the time to call you up, do you think it is really for the purpose to screen you out through a surprise phone call? Did you say something really dumb, like it is only your backup or you hate the school colors?

no i did not say anything dumb in fact i said its one of my top choices (my third choice out of several).

My sons received calls from colleges. Often they are trying to get students to apply to the schools. It shouldn’t harm your chances in any way. Take it as a compliment.

I got a call from the university I ended up attending. Calls are nothing but good!

Nothing you say on the call will affect your chances. They are only used to encourage applicants to be interested in a school and are not a factor in the admissions decision process. It is nice to be called, enjoy it.
