College Chances for an Academically Poor Student

I had to lower my goals, after realizing how terrible my academics really are. Time to face reality! So instead of aiming at schools like Drexel or Rutgers, I was thinking more along the lines of Arcadia and Rider. But even those schools are unrealistic reaches for me, considering my GPA and ACT scores.

GPA: 3.0 with 15 AP/Honors classes
- My senior year GPA currently stands at 3.7. Unfortunately, senior year grades do not matter to colleges, even those that require a midyear report.

ACT: 27 (23 Math, 23 Science, 30 English, 32 Reading, and 11 Essay)

So can I get into a college? I am not even seeking a good college (good, in my opinion). I simply want to get into a four year institution. I am doubtful any college will accept me.

I actually had a friend with a similar GPA and probably lower test scores (I’m thinking maybe 1750 SAT) get admitted to two colleges last week, they were East Carolina U and Longwood U, so don’t give up hope, there is a school out there for you, you just need to look properly.

Thank you. So basically I need a college with a 75%+ acceptance rate. Nonetheless, any four year institution would be better than a community college.

What is your college budget? That will have more impact than anything else.

Money is not a problem. The problem is that very few schools accept students with a “B” GPA and an atrocious ACT score of 27. Unless I find a school with a ridiculously high acceptance rate, community college is all I have. Rider has about a 70% acceptance rate but I doubt I will be part of the 70% that gets in. I need a college with 90%+ for me to feel confident I’m getting in.

Your statistics are not that bad. You aren’t going to Harvard with those scores and GPA, but nonetheless there are a lot of colleges that will consider and accept you.

And an ACT score of 27 is not “atrocious” by any means. 51% of students admitted to NYU scored between 24-29 on the test.

FYI…know a good number of “B” students at both Rutgers and Drexel that had lower scores than a 27 ACT…and they didn’t have 15 AP courses…

Where are you getting your info from? There are a number of 3.0-3.3 threads on CC…with many, many options for schools…check them out…

Thanks, I just feel a bit neurotic and panic-stricken right now. Being surrounded by kids with 3.7+ GPAs who are applying to Drexel and Rutgers as their top choices makes me think I have no chance.

You seem absolutely fine to me. I know people who didn’t even bother to make it past Algebra 2 or take a language, and they are getting accepted into colleges. A lot of it is about what you’re going to school for. Personally, many of my friends are going for music or theatre, so grades are less important. Even if you are going to school for what most people might consider a more “legitimate” or “less lazy” degree, you can still definitely get into college.
Check out state schools, and don’t count out the better school you mentioned. A friend of mine applied to Yale even with some pretty bad grades because they really do try to diversify and could surprise you.
