College conversation

What do I ask colleges? Some of my friends tell me that they have started talking to colleges and have a pretty good relation. What exactly to talk about?

The vast majority of applicants don’t talk with adcoms, and if they do it doesn’t necessarily matter. Just turn in a great application; contact colleges if you really need information that you can’t find on their website.

Most information can be gathered from the college website. I’m not sure what else you need to know. Is it specific info you need about the major you are interested in or the college itself? Your question was a little broad and not sure what you need to know.

At larger schools, this sort of effort will make no difference. At small schools where each person reads just a few hundred applications per year, striking up a conversation (often by email) with the admissions counselor assigned to your HS can be helpful, but not before fall senior year. There is a lot of turnover in these positions from year to year.

Reach out, introduce yourself, identify an academic interest and let them know why you are interested in the school. Ask question or two and inquire when they’ll be in your area. Then make a point of going to the college fair or whatever is bringing them to town and reminding them who you are. Use each subsequent contact to provide a little more information about yourself. Don’t pester and don’t be too wordy. The idea is for the adcom to have a positive impression of you already when he/she reads your application.
