I plan on transferring to University of Southern California for a degree in Economics. USC states that if you have 30 or more college credits they will put less emphasis on your high school grades and test scores. Also, I would like to transfer there in my sophomore year if possible. To achieve 30 credits I intend on taking summer classes and a a heavy fall and winter course load so I can achieve 30 credits by their transfer deadline of Feb 11.
How many summer classes/credits is a good amount?
Is this achievable to get 30 credits by the Feb 11 of my freshmen year?
Will my GPA suffer from the large amount of course load?
Feel free to provide any other info or important details that I may have forgotten to ask.
You can likely manage 18 units your fall semester so long as you don’t load up on too many time consuming courses. For instance, taking a foreign language, math, and science course all in the same semester might be a little tough as these courses usually have a higher unit count (and at my CC, foreign languages were usually worth 5 semester units). This leaves you with 12 units. Winter courses can sometimes go extremely fast. My CC had a 5 week winter session and I took 9 units. The result was madness and I scraped by with A-'s (my percentages were barely 90%). Summer sessions average around 8 weeks. It would be wise to take no more than 6 units in the winter and another 6 for summer. Tackling too much in either shortened semester might lead your GPA to suffer unless you know that you can dedicate the time required. The classes will still cover text length covered in a regular semester, so this means 3-4 chapters per week and frequent exams, so it is tough, but doable and lots of people transfer as sophomores. Good luck
Say i do not work during the summer or winter and focus only on school what would be a good amount of credits to pursue? I do not want my gpa to suffer, however i would like to transfer out asap
This is a bit dependent on your CC as well since the summer semester may be split into sessions, so you could technically take a decent amount (maybe up to 12 units if you take 6 each summer session). For winter, I would really not advise taking more than 9 units. It can be tough. Say you take a 5 unit language course. It could meet from 8AM to 1:20PM MTWTHF - that’s 25+ hours of class a week for just one course. The winter session can be insane if it’s 5 or 6 weeks long. Also, like I said, this is really dependent on how your CC works. I didn’t work during the winter session and I still had trouble staying on top of things. It’s quite demanding. My plan that I mentioned above sounds pretty doable to me, but maybe taking 9 summer units, 18 fall units, and 3 winter units might be a possible alternative.
@DevonCastro are you class of 2021?
