Hi... I'm a resident of California and I have less than 3 days to pick my college before I leave on a school competition trip. I plan on majoring in accountancy and it basically boils down to 3 schools.
1) University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign - School of Business( 48k)
2) Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business (50K)
3) UCSB (econ and accounting) 34K

Aside from cost... I plan to work in California later on.... chicago.. ( mebbe but not to hot on that idea.) and I also plan on getting an MBA after 2 years of graduation.. and want to get my CPA license... so which schools offers the best opportunities and environment??please help!

I can only comment on Santa Clara. We did an admitted students tour last weekend, and a similar tour at another school this week.

My son, a business major, did not chose SCU (for several personal reasons) BUT, SCU is a great school. Beautiful campus, outstanding faculty (that we met) and a bright, diverse student base. My only concerns were in the number of ‘social justice’ monologs you get. But, it you like that, then you will be happy there.

I am not an accountant, but I do know that SCU is very well regarded in Silicon Valley for Finance and Accounting. Lots of alumni and internships.

It is expensive to go to SCU, and it is in a very expensive part of the country. Weather is near perfect. Beach is 45 minutes away.

UCSB is a beautiful campus in the best small city in the US in my opinion. Well regarded school. Consider - UC schools are all research universities, so undergrads may not be the center of attention. SCU is primarily undergrad, a BIG deal in my opinion. Others may disagree.

Good luck. Sounds like you don’t have any bad choices.

S chose UCSB (for engineering). The general tour guide and the faculty representative for the College of Engineering stressed over and over again the UCSB is very UG focused. They have around 18K UG and 2K Grad students. This is quite different than UCB or UCSD.

Illinois has an excellent business and accounting school, Accounting is a 5 year program, but if you want to end up in California, it might be easiest to take and pass the exam there.

UCSB does not have an undergrad business school, so if money isn’t a big issue I would pick between Santa Clara and UIUC. UIUC has a consistently top-ranked accounting major, so if I were you I’d go with UIUC, although it does mean sacrificing Cali for rural Illinois.
