College Decision Mistake

Hey guys, i posted on here a couple days ago regarding colleges. i was deciding between UW-Madison and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. I decided on UMN because im majoring in biochemistry and am in the CBS department. I just now kind of regret choosing the U of M. I wish I’d chosen Madison because it’s farther away from home and I was accepted into their honors program for L&S. Any advice or reassurance would be great… I’m not feeling so great at the moment with how things ended up. Thanks.

Email UW today to ask if you can change. Like, right now (before midnight)? You’ll lose your UMN deposit, probably. But it isn’t too late.

Don’t look back and second guess yourself. You made your choice for a reason. And really, there were no “wrong” choices. Move forward. Get excited; you are going to college!!!

@intparent unfortunately, i already withdrew the housing from uw-madison and don’t think this will work. thank you for the advice though.

Regret is super normal…it doesn’t mean you chose wrong, it just means that you’re able to see benefits to both. U of M has a very strong reputation and it sounds like its perfect for your major.

Yes, there’s a reason they have a name for it - buyer’s remorse. Humans are attuned to choice and potential; some of s really like thinking about all of the potential in different choices. Making a choice can oddly feel like a letdown because while you are gaining a lot, you are still losing an entire potential line of opportunities to you. A chapter is closed.

The thing is…the University of Minnesota is a great university. The Twin Cities are great, and going to college in a nearby city is a completely different experience than visiting a place as a high schooler or younger. Distance from college doesn’t really matter - I went to college only 20 minutes from home and grew and learned and had a completely blast. you will too!

You could still switch, you just would have suboptimal housing (potentially) your first year, I think.

@SouthernHope thank you for the message. i’m starting to think you’re right.

@julliet thank you  I’m definitely keep that in mind.

MN will be a phenomenal experience and, much as I love UW, will be a more diverse community, both institutionally and in the surrounding area. To the extent that you are thinking about “missing” UW Honors program – don’t let that be a factor at all. UW Honors is not a separate “college”, there are no separate dorms etc. My kid is completing Honors program requirements to graduate with Honors in the Liberal Arts, and his friends don’t really know it. And, if you feel strongly about it at MN, you can apply after first semester! Lastly, I went to college 10 minutes from my home, lived on campus – but I could have been hundreds of miles away. My friends were from all over, I didn’t go home or see my family until Tgiving, and it just meant I didn’t have to wait in crowded airports on holidays to get home like my friends! Your experience at MN will be as “new” as you make it – live on campus and experience college as a “regular” freshman.

Congrats, as I said before, these are both wonderful choices, and you will have a great experience at MN!
