What are the internet download and upload speeds usually like in a dorm room in a university? Which college have particularly fast dorm internet speeds? (Most universities limit the speeds of what the average student gets, even if their internet is actually really fast)

It really depends, not only one the college but on the specific residence hall/dorm. Ask on your college’s own forum.

It varies from college to college. I know that at my university, dorm internet absolutely sucks if you’re not connected to it via ethernet cable (with ethernet cable, it works fast, though for some reason, my roommate was the only one who ever had problems with the dorm internet while me and my suitemates never had problems). If you’re trying to access dorm wifi, well, get ready for extremely poor signals and dropped connection every 2 seconds.

I lived in two different dorms at my school. Both had fast internet through ethernet, 50-100 mpbs I think it was.

Wifi…well not so much. Freshman year I was right by the den, so I could use it fine, but even in the den at peak times it had a hard time loading youtube videos, had to do 240p. Off peak times it was faster, could watch HD videos no problem. Sophomore year I didn’t get wifi in my room, though the den wifi was fast enough for browsing the internet/watching videos. You will likely want to get an ethernet cord.

Now in campus buildings, it can be insanely fast. I get 700 to 800 mpbs in the engineering computer lab the few times I’ve tested it Oh, and 0 ms pings. Note that the server I’m testing from is only a bit over a mile away.

if you type in your school and “internet speed” there might be a thread already, if not make one.

Here’s a thread from early 2010: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-computers/869040-college-internet-speed-2.html

In our kids’ U, using the Ethernet cable was ALWAYS faster than wireless wifi. Something else to consider.

Same here. Also some people would get their own router so they could get wifi for their phones/ipods/etc in their room. Or so they can use one ethernet for the router and the other for an xbox.
