College/Dorm Life in UCSC

Hello, I was admitted to UCSC under the Biology major, and I really want to find the perfect college for me ahead of time. Due to SC's reputation of being a party school, I had to narrow my choices down to Crown, College 9/10, and Merrill. I am a pretty studious, easily DISTRACTED, and I don't do drugs or alcohol and don't want to be near people who do so. I know that all colleges aren't perfect, but for the current students, which college/dorm seems to be the ideal one? Thanks.

UCSC really isn’t a party school. In reality, most UCs kind of party the same amount as each other (not counting UCSB). However, UCSC campus is kinda isolated from the actual town, so it can be argued that there are actually less parties going on because of transportation logistics.

I really wouldn’t advise you to pick a college based on that criteria, because it actually differs year-to-year of who you live with in your floor/building. Example: You might be put into a floor in College 9 that has people who love to go out, party, make noise, etc. Your friend on the floor below you might have a dull floor where everyone might just stick to themselves. It’s pretty much the luck of the draw.

If you are really concerned about getting distracted with those kind of people, you might be luckier at a place such as Crown. I’ve heard less stories of people in Crown with those kind of tendencies.

All colleges are party schools to a certain degree. I don’t really hear UCSC as being a party school. I do hear UCSB is one. I wouldn’t know though. It depends on who you hang out w/ i guess? Ahh i’m trying to research housing too, not sure where to go D:

ive heard that Crown is the science/nerd college. I have been reading the college guide they sent me and you can choose to be in a substance free floor or a floor where people like it quiet for studying more.

Not that many people request the substance free/quite floors, so students who don’t request them actually get placed in those floors due to limited amount of rooms for each college. This is usually the case with all girl’s floors because only a few students request those kind of floors each year because of their parent’s (sometimes their own) decision. The funny thing is that I actually saw more guys hang out on that floor than the regular floors, haha.

^Yeah, I was stuck in the women’s hall and I definitely didn’t choose to be there.
Ironically, the substance-free hall last year was worse than a lot of the other halls at Porter.

But then again, that’s Porter. If you really want to avoid partying at all costs, don’t choose Porter. Even if you choose not to party, you will have to deal with other’s partying at least once in a while. Then again, that’s probably the case at other colleges too…

Hmm, thanks for the advice. I’m probably down to either Crown or Colleges 9/10, and I’m considering more for 9/10 since they are closer to the Bio building, their structures are newer, and that they have a study-intensive floor (yes, my mom urges me to go there). Is the environment on the study-intensive floor really “study-intensive”? The sister of my cousin’s gf (not a partier/druggest) also goes to SC as a 3rd year in College 9 and said that it’s pretty good study environment.

So if I wanted a better chance to get a single room, I should apply for one of those floors?

Haha, Porter A’s Substance Free this year can get a little crazy too, which is ironic because a lot of us requested to be here. People think we’re the boring floor and mostly ignore us, but we’ve had some awesome parties since being here.
