Undergrad freshmen this year, I'm just wondering how's the overall community at UCSC?

Are people friendly and accepting or like clique-y and judgmental (aka high school-y)?
I don't really wanna feel excluded/mocked/left out for being who I am.

And I mean me as in; a sorta shy, sorta gamer-geeky, sorta chunky-built, mostly silly person who doesn't really intend to do any partying/drinking/drugs and is more into just meeting and hanging out with new friends.
Is there any pressure between friends to party/drink/etc?

I take school seriously and I'm not sure how normal that is. Like, are the typical college stereotypes prevalent?

I'm not the most attractive guy in the world either, so I'm wondering what the dating scene is like there. Do people there take looks extremely seriously 'n stuff? D:

The community is great. Of course as the year goes on people will solidify groups of friends, but I’ve never come across clique-y groups of people. Quite the opposite of high school, people are glad to make acquaintances year round. Me, nor any of my friends (who mostly abstain from typical partying) have met with pressure to drink/smoke/etc. There is still some amount of typical college stereotypes floating around, though a lot of that depends on which college you’re living at. Can’t speak about the dating scene.

UCSC is such a huge school, there will be a community for you somewhere. Even though each college has its own stereotypes, there will be just as many people who break them as fit them.

Heh, maybe we will! xD
What house are you gonna be in? And what do you personally think of Crown?
Is it generally quiet/relaxed or sorta loud/active and is there any major differences between the residence houses?

I’m gonna’ be in Maxwell. I LOVE Crown to bits. It’s got just the right mix of nerds and “normal” people. The activity level depends on the people on your floor. But from the outside it’s fairly quiet. Even the parties tend to be on the quiet side. Of course there are a few things that make Crown loud on occasion…we seem to have the most “team spirit” when it comes to campus-wide games of capture the flag. Not to mention anything involving nerf guns. Bring a nerf gun to college or you will regret it.

Major differences between houses…I think not. Noise levels vary, but that’s all up to chance unless you’re in Galileo. Galileo has stricter quiet hours. Gauss has a kitchen in the basement. Otherwise, the house you’re in just decides what kind of awesome field trips you might be able to go on (based on the house’s theme).

If you want you can contact me on AIM under the s/n: Paperoid

Sure! You could start a trend at another college, hah. And you’re welcome to participate in any Crown nerf events, of course. There are a few games of humans vs zombies every year and a few other nerf games of sorts.
