I recieved an email from San Francisco state (my top choice) stating that i need to sign up to take the "entry level mathematics" entrance exam. It also said I needed to take this exam in order to register for classes, so does that mean im in? However, It also said to not wait to recieve an admission decision (i havent recieved one yet) to sign up for the test. I havent gotten an email like this from any of the other schools I applied to and the two people I know who have gotten in have not been asked to take an entrance exam. What does this mean?

Unless you find a SF State student on this forum, you’ll only receive guesses. To me, a phone call seems to be in order – not reading replies on this thread.

During your STAR tests junior year, you had an optional section called EAP. If you did that section (and did well enough on it), you get to skip the placement exams for CSUs. So I’m going to guess your friends did that, and you either didn’t or didn’t try very hard.

I have to take both entrance exams. I am out of state. I got my acceptance before Christmas, I think.

Are there many out of staters who go to San Fran State?

I have been accepted to USF as well. Can anyone tell me the strengths of San Fran State and the weaknesses?

I went out for a visit in October and they were closed.

Thank you.

Yes, you are “in” – but SFSU (like many of the CSUs) wants to make sure their students are ready for college level math/english classes. Thus, either you pass some other criteria, have taken a CC math/english class that preempts that requirement… or you take the PLACEMENT test.

Basically the placement test will put you in the “right” part of a math/english sequence. They probably require you to take the placement test before registration, because if they didn’t, 90% of the incoming students would avoid it as long as possible, causing other issues down the road. Like a college senior who is done with all of his credits, except math, with one semester to go and he places in pre-college math and needs 2 or more semesters to finish up what he needs for graduation on the GE side.

So, yes, you are in. Read the school’s website for more info on test dates, etc.

As for comparison of USF and SFSU - one is a small private jesuit school, the other a large public school. So what do you want to know? Go online and compare course offerings, size of departments, class sizes, etc - I don’t know if you can pick 2 more different type/sizes of schools. I really don’t think either is massively more renowned than the other and it is like comparing apples and oranges. Only you know what 2 or 3 criteria are most important to yourself.
