Ok so I wrote two college essays that I love very much. Both are extremely different in mood and content. So my dilemma is: Do I choose sentiment and depth...or...Light-hearted humorous fun that is a lot more like me??

I’m not really sure this is a good question for the Internet. My advice is that you should give them both to a very small number of people whose opinion you value and ask them which one they think works better.

Keep the number small, because you will surely get conflicting opinions if you ask enough people.

And make the number odd, because you will surely get conflicting opinions.

Thank you.

Sorry it doesn’t actually help you answer your question.

But note that if somebody comes along after and gives advice opposite to mine, that just makes my point.

Haha. I’ll be sure too note that.

My advice to my daughter was to use the essay that sounded more like her. I mean, both did, but in her case, like yours, the more lighthearted one seemed to contain more of her voice. Plus, I always worry a bit that something sentimental and deep might come off as trying too hard to twist the reader’s heartstrings.
