College Essay format -- double spaced?

Ok, gang, a question that has come up with my daughter's English teacher, who has the kids filling out the Common App:

Is it necessary for essays for the Common App (or, for that matter, any college essays) to be double spaced?

This teacher (AP English Literature 12) insists that the essays be double spaced. I don't remember my older daughter (who graduated college in May and was quite fortunate in her admissions decisions) double spacing hers.

???

Double spaced.
My kids were taught to write in MLA format. So every essay and paper that they write is always double spaced in HS (and I assume in college since I haven’t seen any of Ds work). Ds common app essay and all supplementals were double spaced

[MLA Format](http://www.hw.com/academics/usenglish/Web%20Texts/MLA%20Format.htm)

Ask ur D how she did hers

It might just be so that the teacher can read it more easily?

In the Texas Common Application, the formatting gets very “lost” when you cut and paste. Is it not the same with the regular common app?

YoHo YoHo, yes, that must be it. Thank you. I am a former newspaper writer, so I always think in terms of taking up the least space possible. But I am sure the teacher is insisting on MLA format.

My son’s last year was single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs and it fit on one page for the common ap.

I do not believe it has to be double spaced which mean 2 pages of an essay to read.

Both are acceptable, but personally, I would prefer to read a one page essay instead of two.

In HS, all his essays were double spaced though.

My D’s common ap main essay was double spaced. Her short one on the EC was not.

cromette, she did not copy and paste her main essay, the file was uploaded from Word.

Because of the word count limits, a double spaced essay only takes up one page. Actually, maybe it is only 1.5 spaced?

Anything that can be uploaded, I double spaced :). The copy & paste essays and short answers were single spaced.

Everything my D submitted was single spaced. No double spacing even between paragraphs. Worked for her.
