Hello, fellow students! I was just curious about what college essay topics are considered cliche! I was planing on writing about a rare medical condition I have known as Dermatillomania (Excoriation Disorder) and how it has affected me as a person as well as my academic and social success. Would that be considered cliche? Do a lot of people write about medical illnesses they've had? What topics aren't considered cliche?

As long as you write YOUR story, it’s not cliche. Only you know what it’s like to live with your condition, etc. as long as you avoid making your situation sound like an excuse and truly write from the heart, you’ll have a successful essay.

Vamominvabeach is right.
Be yourself. Write it in your own words.
Personally, I don’t think your illness is cliche. Pretty unique even.

Best of luck to you in the application process.

Thanks for the responses guys! They are very helpful and I definitely wasn’t going to use my medical condition as an excuse for any grade drops or anything along those lines!
