I see that a lot of top liberal arts colleges say they want to see personal voice IN ADDITION TO strong writing skills in the essay, and I’m slightly concerned since I’m an international student and writing isn’t my best asset. My first language is Korean and I’ve been schooled in English for the past 6 years (so I don’t need TOEFL) but I can’t really write essays “beautifully”. I can express pretty much most of what I want to express through writing, but I don’t think it’s very elaborative like a prose literature or something.
Am I at a significant disadvantage in applying to liberal arts colleges because I can’t write essays elaborately? Or is it fine as long as I keep everything reasoned properly and to the point? (I’m not very good at literary writing but I’m good at analytical writing like the ones in history/social sciences) Is there any quick tip that I can take? I’ll be applying to colleges this fall.
Thank you

The essay question might ask you about your best quality, an experience that shaped you or the reason you want to attend a certain college. Don’t be tempted to write what you think the admission officers want to hear; answer the question honestly.
I’m with suzy100. Hack the College Essay, among other tips, says to keep the language simple, rather than using elaborate vocabulary. I have to say that their advice was extremely helpful and made it less daunting for my daughter to find her topic and voice. Give it a try!
