Need some advice about essay topics..

So I had a great essay idea, but apparently the idea has been used a couple of times (and at the same school I attend on applying at.) It has to do with the Korean culture, and I guess it is simply inevitable for emulation.

Should I still attempt writing it when college admissions come around? I would probably be able to speak powerfully in it, but I can't forget the fact that the admissions office has already read a topic similar to it. Or should I just move on to another essay topic?

thanks!

The topic does not matter that much. Keep it interesting and make it personal. If you can supply anecdotes and allow the words to paint a picture of what you are like, go for it. If it would be cliche, pick another topic.

How personal does it need to be? I distinguish between “personal voice”, which is where the essay sounds like a person’s narration (voice), and “personal content” which is including personal anecdotes, facts etc.

It’s just that I wrote mine about the benefits of liberal arts subjects (phrased less blandly) and why I took the subjects I took at high school. It’s not very personal… I kind of present an argument about why liberal arts, without using that term, are so important, by using (what I hope are) compelling, unique points.

Well, it sounds good to me. I haven’t read it, so I wouldn’t know. I would say just don’t let it be forced and it should be fine.
