Do you think colleges would prefer an essay that was humorous or one that was personal and depressing? An example would be my experience with tutoring, because something funny always happens. Or my personal story about waiting for my diagnoses and thinking it possibly being cancer.

I would be careful about writing an essay that describes you as neurotic or depressive. American society tends to have a stigma about depression (unfortunately), and you want to show the best side of yourself in a college essay.

However, the humorous essay should also have depth and provide insight into who you are.

Good luck!

You want admission officers to think, “wow, this kid is something.”
Just put yourself in a good light & make sure you don’t give off too much of a negative stigma.

Thanks ! :)

Thank you for your advice

I agree with Luminouzzz. Go with the humorous one, but include depth. Although, if you write about waiting for the diagnosis, write it in a mildly humorous way (perhaps humorous isn’t the right word for it…). Does that make sense? I’m not telling you to minimize your experience - I’m suggesting that you present it in a positive light. Tell your story in a way that doesn’t make it seem like you’re seeking sympathy.

if you’re funny, be funny! if the depression is who you are and something you’ve learned to deal with, do that! this is all about letting schools know who you are
