How many truly different College essays do people write for the various prompts for ~7-10 schools when they apply? This one essay adviser informed me that I would probably only write around 4, slightly tweaking each to to fit the different prompts which are all inherently the same.

I’m guessing you’re referring to Supplemental Essays when you mean “College essays” in which case it depends on what schools you’re applying to. i.e. You wouldn’t be able to use your supplemental essay for NYU (which asks something like "explain why New York is such a great resource for learning etc. etc.) for most schools.

I was referring to common app+supplements together because a lot of schools have some fairly generic prompts that common app essays can be tweaked to fit save a few cases such as NYU, as you mentioned, and U Chicago

Whoops sorry missed your part about ‘most schools’. Are you positive about that? Many of the past prompts don’t have that level of specificity in their prompts, I’d say its on the rarer side but I’m not sure.
