There is going to be a "selective college fair" in my area soon and my counselor says it's highly recommended for me to go. It has Cornell and about 5 other selective schools and says there will be alumni interviewers in a small interactive environment. Has anyone been to this type of event before? Is it worth it for me to go? (I'm only interested in Cornell and I think I know pretty much everything I need to about it) If so, what should I do? I don't have any real questions I want to know..

I say its worth a shot. Sometimes top-notch colleges visit my school (i.e. Johns Hopkins on Wednesday) and so I schedule an appt so they “have me on record” (if that even counts for anything). Mine are during lunch so I can just see them for like 5 minutes and show face.

College fairs are about learning more about colleges. If you are only interested in one college that will be there and are not open to learning about the other colleges it does not seem like it is worth it. That being said you should schedule some form of interview with Cornell (assuming you are a senior) since it seems to be a school you are very interest in…

I think it is worth it. You can talk to a representative and get your name in their mind and be one of those students that show their face, take initiative and show interest. Maybe you will really impress an alumni interviewer and he’ll talk about you to his colleagues, keep in contact, etc. Who knows?

And you might even find another school you’re interested in. Keep an open mind… this is college. There is no one size fits all.

Thanks! I think I will go. Any advice on what to say?

Consider this an oportunity to learn as much as you can.
