Does anyone know of any fencers that have been offered scholarships yet. If so what schools.

most of that money goes to imports that coaches will bring in from Europe after Junior Worlds most of the rest will be academic money awarded by the school.

Fencing Recruits - PAY ATTENTION TO THE LEVEL OF COACHING YOU SEE AT THE NACâS WATCH HOW CERTAIN COLLEGES & TEAMMATES SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER. I say that because the Cleveland NAC 11-8 thru 11-11 2013 was terrible. I saw one collegiate team that was totally unsupported but for the Canadian team members who had a complete team/their coaches and the US coaches cheering and directing them on, while the Americans on the same collegiate team where all unsupported by any coaching whatsoever and it isnât the first time. Itâs really, really bad when a coach from an NCAA championship contender assist the recruit that went to another school with coaching support or advice. I watched the coaching staff & teammates carry a fencer from the round of 64 to a top four finish. I saw collegiate coaches who traveled from PA/NY/NC/ILL/IN/CA/CO/MI/MA all come and support their fencers, even Andy at CSU supported his fencers at , so BEWAREâŠRECRUITS WATCH HOW THE CURRENT COACHES INTERACT WITH THEIR CURRENT FENCERS, THEY DONâT ALWAYS SUPPORT THEIR ROSTERâŠand really that is sad.

Schoolhouse, I get the overall message to watch how coaches support their fencers, but I donât really understand the rest of your post.

@ bighorse66, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Duke

@ nervousmomo can you share the fencers name. If so, male and female.

Hey Bighorse66, I am not really comfortable writing names of kids on here, but can tell you my child was offered thoseâŠhowever, if we had saved all of the money we have spent on club dues, lessons and travel, we could have paid and then some. I would never suggest anyone go into fencing for scholarships, but for getting into places, the sport is amazing!

And I will add that in many years around fencing, all of the people I know who have received significant money, were highly ranked and had a lot of international experience, the few exceptions I can think of are people who increased their award by results in collegeâŠ

Public knowledge now that Francesca Russo (saber) is headed to ND.

I heard a couple years ago that the fencing coach at Yale doesnât get involved much in recruiting. I also heard that Yale only recruited 2 fencers that year. Does anyone know, if they are recruiting so few, is it because fencing is allocated so few slots at Yale? Or is it because the coach doesnât like recruiting? Or what?

Thanks for the PM, schoolhouse. Wish I could reply the same way.

Itâs hard to know about the Yale coach. When my S visited unofficially the coach seemed indifferent, even though he would have been their best foilist and his AI was 235. Later S received an encouraging email from someone else in the athletic department, but never anything at all from the coach.

I canât answer your question, but we had a sabreur from our club who fenced for Yale, but she actually took a year off to train at our club and when at Yale would commute to NYC every weekend to train at club(s) there. I guess the coaching at Yale is not so great? Maybe? I donât know.

How much does it help to be tagged? The duke coach tagged my application for fencing, I applied ED, have a 2220 SAT score and a 3.75 GPA with five AP courses last year. I have a similar schedule this year.

It helps A LOT. No guarantees, but youâre probably in good shape. Good luck. Their team is like a family; Iâm sure youâll be happy there if you get in.

Thanks! I really hope I get in!

@schoolhouse (from back on post #110): I looked up Desiraeâs record via 14 meters, and it looks like she was competing back in Y12s so there was some training before Culver. Again, not to say that the Culver coach didnât help her grow. But she had competed before going to school there btw, very interesting to see who she fenced against in Y12 many of the familiar names atop the various NRPS lists.

Looks like Harvard WF will pick-up two, as well as a WS at UPenn âŠyes, ED/LL and now facebook confirms are flying all over the place,

Thank you all for sharing valuable info. I am learning a lot from the forum.

I am a junior (male) in a small private high school, ranked top 10 in Junior and top 20 in Senior nationally in my event. I took SAT I once and got 2010, and one SAT II 760. My unweighted GPA is 4.0, and weighted 4.3 so far, with a fairly rigorous course load.

I am interested in Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton. I think my SAT I is too low for these schools. Should I wait until I get a higher score before contacting coaches? How actively does the Stanford coaches recruit? Iâve seen Harvard and Princeton coaches at the national events, but havenât seen Stanford coaches. Thank you once again!
