That’s 4 B10 teams that smacked ND.

^ And 2 Pac-10 teams that lost to ND. I get your point…;)

Because I need something to do while procrastinating:

The Big Ten went 29-7 in nonconference games against FBS teams, and 6-2 against FCS teams. Of the FBS teams:
Teams the B10 beat were a combined 119-231.
Teams the B10 lost to were a combined 43-42.
Total record of B10 nonconference teams (only FBS): 162-273, a .372 win percentage.

The Pac-10 went 19-10 against FBS and 2-0 against FCS.
Teams the Pac-10 beat were a combined 105-123.
Teams the Pac-10 lost to were a combined 80-40.
That’s a total of 185-163, a .532 win percentage.

The Big 10 beat two teams with 8 or more wins: Mich State over Bowling Green, and Purdue over Central Michigan. The Pac-10 beat seven teams with 8 or more wins: Michigan, Tennessee, Utah, Fresno State, Houston, Boise State, and BYU.
The Big Ten had three losses to teams with losing records; the Pac-10 had two (both to Notre Dame).

I would also point out that part of the reason so many teams in the Big 10 have winning records is because they all got to beat up on Minnesota. The same thing happened in the Pac-10 last year when a whole bunch of teams were bowl-eligible because they all beat up on Stanford.

^ Sweet! How did you pull up the info? A college football stat site? Or were you truly bored and calculated all this looking at their schedule records?

Uhh, beating up on ONE team hardly makes for a winning record (btw, a couple of B10 teams did not play Minny).

And most conferences had teams as crappy as Minny (ACC Duke; B12 Baylor; BE - Syracuse; SEC Ole Miss)

Big10

Number of teams in final BCS Top 10: 1
Number of teams in final BCS Top 25: 3
Bowl teams: 8
Non-conference record: 35-9
Non-conference record vs. BCS foes: 9-4

Pac10

Number of teams in final BCS Top 10: 1
Number of teams in final BCS Top 25: 2
Bowl teams: 6
Non-conference record: 21-10
Non-conference record vs. BCS foes: 7-6

Good thing the Big 10 extended their season to allow play past Thanksgiving starting next year. Maybe they’ll be more competitive in future bowl games vs. being sluggish after a 6 week lay off.

UCBChemEGrad: I just looked through each team’s schedule and checked the records of their opponents, so yes, I was that bored.

Part of the problem the Pac-10 had this season was that it wasn’t very stratified. In the B10, the little guys were able to snipe a win here and there from the likes of Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, but for the most part, the teams that were “supposed” to win games actually won them. In the Pac-10, however, that wasn’t the case at all. A lot of teams won games they “shouldn’t” have won–look at Stanford over USC and Cal, Wazzu over UCLA, Washington over Cal, UCLA over Oregon, etc.

On top of that, the Pac-10 plays nine conference games instead of eight, which means a cream-puff opponent gets replaced by an unpredictable conference game.

In those nonconference records, throw in one more easy opponent for each pac-10 team, and their record probably becomes 30-11 or thereabouts, which is comparable to that of the big 10.

On a slight switch…

Can ANYONE in the Championship Subdivision match Appalachian State straight-up in an all-or-nothing game?! Just massacred the Delaware Hens 49-21 in the NCAA Championship. Armanti Edwards is being mentioned as a possible 2008 HEISMAN CANDIDATE - A QUARTERBACK FOR A LOWER-DIVISION TEAM.

GET THESE GUYS IN THE BCS, THE FCS CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH CARNAGE!!!

how about ECU last night?

I didn’t watch it but sounded like a great game. The Boise State RB had a career night but threw the game away with a fumble.

Anyone watching the bowls?

What’s your pick: LSU or tOSU?

Despite what I’ve written about the Big 10 in the past, I want to root for the underdog this time around. It definitely has to do with the SEC freaks who went wild after last night’s slaughter of Hawaii. No fans are completely classy, but I have to admit while some of it IS warranted, all that Southern yakking and yowling gets old eventually.

It might be all right if every other year the other conference wins. Last year it was the SEC, maybe next week tOSU will play like Michigan yesterday and completely confound an LSU that got lazy off its own hype. We’ll see.

So, uh, how bout them Trojans? :)

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I pick Ohio State. For the following:

I’m conditioned to not like LSU. They stole our championship :)

Ohio State was embarrassed last year. They’ll definitely be out for some SEC revenge.

Illinois nonwithstanding, the Big 10 has done very well so far in their bowls (Penn St, Michigan, etc)

considering OSU gave up <100 yrs to U of M and Fla gave up >500, I think the Buckeyes D will help win them the game. This is not to say I wouldn’t love to see OSU lose.

Well, it is kind of hard to compare stats from games. But considering the fact that Michigan had Mike Hart, it definitely seems like LSU will have to go through the air to win…

And before anyone points it out, I didn’t really mean the Big 10 is doing that well in bowl games (they’re 3-4). But they do have some high profile victories and a number of close games (Michigan St and Wisconsin)

Cocky as hell, like always. :)

Umm, how did LSU “steal” your championship when USC wasn’t in the National Championship game? USC was arguably considered co-champions.

As far as tOSU and LSU, I say Ohio State has the motivation. They’ve been hearing all along how they don’t belong in the game and they’ll want to shake off the demons from last year. The game could go either way, but I’m sure they’d love to stick it to the Michigan man in the hat.

UCBChemEGrad, is it any coincidence that Cal won its bowl game when Riley was QB =P?

If Tedford starts Longshore next year, I might just drop out of college.

Oh, and Pac10 did pretty well for itself this bowl season, UCLA (no coach) and ASU (no O-line) notwithstanding. And speaking of crappy O-lines, poor Colt Brennan…

Having grown up in a Big 10 state, my default is to root for the big 10 team. I also don’t want to see a two-loss team win the national championship, although it wouldn’t be quite as bad as if Oklahoma, Georgia, or USC got it since both LSU’s losses were in 3 overtimes.

Too bad about Hawaii; I was hoping to see them win. At least this removes another bit of controversy from the championship debate.

Heck yeah, Sax… hopefully, Tedford’s eyes were pulled open! Imagine what could have been if he didn’t stick with Gimpy Longshore for soooo long…

Poor UCLA…but, I can’t help but snicker at the Bruins.

I’m surprised the convicted felon is still alive.

What Boise State giveth to non-BCS conferences, Hawaii taketh away.

My point exactly. LSU ended up with a share of the championship. USC ended #1 in the polls indicating people thought they were the best team.

Maybe they didn’t “steal” the championship, per se, but frankly, given what I hear from LSU fans, I would say I’m letting them off easy in comparison :)
