College Football Discussion 08

nah...there's already too much stuff to watch at the collegiate level. i don't need to watch more sports.

Yeah, in the case of a tie, the one with the highest BCS ranking advances to the title game. Northwestern vs. USC? Haha that would be something. However I agree there is no way Florida should lose any of their remaining games, they're simply playing too well. Me and a buddy were talking about it, and I really would like the see this year's Heisman winner playing against Florida in the BCS. Think about it, two Heisman winning quarterbacks going up against each other, representing the two best conferences in the sport, the SEC and the Big 12 (assuming they make it there). Whether its Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy or Graham Harrell, who knows. My bet's on Bradford, but let's see how the season plays out.

What's everyone's dream bowl game match-up?

I was browsing through different analysts' bowl projections today and saw one that really looked interesting: Alabama vs. Texas. I'd like to see that, plus USC vs. Florida. Texas Tech, with its crazy offense, vs. an SEC defense, like Georgia or LSU.

As good as Oklahoma is, can anyone see them laying another egg in their bowl game this year (think West Virginia '08, Boise State '07, USC '05)?

Army-Navy for a National Championship ;)

Yeah about that... haha. I don't know about Alabama vs. Texas, I don't think that Alabama has the star power that would make a good game. Neither does Penn State. Florida vs. Texas, sounds pretty good-two Heisman winners (McCoy's a reach, but hey), and two of the biggest states for lower level football. Why not? I'd also like to see the old school approach of Penn State go up against the flash and new school ways of USC. Texas Tech vs. Alabama would be an awesome game. And oh god, I hope Oklahoma doesn't lay another egg- I don't think Stoops can take it anymore. And plus, Bradford has another year under his belt, so does Iglesias and Murray-I'd count on them to win their bowl game. So lets go over my dream bowl games:

National Championship:

Florida vs. Texas (possibly Oklahoma)

Rose Bowl:

USC vs. Penn State

Fiesta Bowl:

Texas Tech vs. Alabama

And the rest I don't care too much about.

I would agree with Martin, although I honestly think both Oklahoma teams will beat TTU. Just replace TTU with OU in your picture, and I'd be very very happy.

Oh don't get me wrong, I believe both teams will beat Tech also-but wouldn't it be nice to dream?

If both teams beat Tech, then Texas goes to the Big 12 championship. If Texas then wins that, and Florida wins the SEC championship, Martin's projection of the BCS championship game is right on target!!

This would be a dream matchup for my family, I have one son at UF and another at UT. We would break the bank to go to Miami for that one and wear 1/2 blue and 1/2 burnt orange :)

ag54, I can only image the tension! Just give it a couple of hours, and a Penn State fan boy will come in and say there's no way they're going to lose the rest of their games-and that they're going to Miami. Although its a good point, how much better would McCoy versus Tebow sound? Two spread offenses going at it in a shootout? Come on.

No question it would be an amazing game! Penn State, although undefeated, is not up to the caliber of the top teams of the SEC or Big 12 south this year. (Sorry Nittany fans, it is what it is). If Penn State DOES go to the championship and get beaten, there will be no better evidence of the need for a playoff in college football.

Last Saturday, when an analyst on college game day mentioned the fact that Penn State deserved to go because they are undefeated, another analyst said, "So What, so is Abilene Christian" (in the Lonestar League) - perhaps an unfair comparison, but telling none-the-less.

If it happens (UT v UF) it will be amazing for us! But no less amazing that the 1 national football championship and 2 basketball national championships that Florida has won in the last 3 years, nor the 1 football national championship that Texas won vrs. perennially OVER-RATED USC a few years ago!

I can dream!! ;)

I posted this in another thread, but here's my analysis:

Penn State beat (non-ranked) Oregon State who beat perennially over-rated USC, who may lose to Cal this weekend. Oregon State has also been beaten by Stanford this year, for heaven's sake. Penn State BARELY beat OSU who was trounced by USC. OSU, along with Penn State has a cream puff schedule which will not be overlooked by the pollsters, nor the computer which calculates BCS standings by strength of schedule - why TT passed up Penn State this week.

Florida, after the dumb loss to Mississippi has been playing inspired and vicious football, beating up on highly ranked SEC opponents - they will play top ranked Alabama in the SEC championship and which ever one of those two deserving teams win will go to the championship game.

The Big 12 (south in particular) has been recognized as the most competitive conference this year by everyone (but Nittany Lion fans), and if none of the games coming up (TT v OSU, TT v OU, OSU v OU) are complete blowouts, which lessen the index scores, the BCS computer rankings will more than likely send the champion of the Big 12 to the BCS championship game due to strenght of schedule wins - each of the 1 loss teams have their 1 loss against teams that are ranked in the top 10 of all the polls.

Don't argue with me, argue with the computer.

Now, all this will be moot if Texas Tech wins out (which I don't think will happen). If they do, then they will go on to play either Alabama or Florida.

Come on, you think USC is terribly overrated? I don't know, I just have a strong feeling that whoever USC plays in the Rose Bowl is going to get destroyed. They are the best team in the nation when prepared and mentally focused-although that isn't always the case. However, I'll agree Florida has been playing some inspiring football-when Tebow went up onto the podium and spoke after that loss to Ole Miss, you could tell he was a true leader who meant what he said, not some punk trying to show up on national television. And so far, he's been playing like the Heisman winner he is. I doubt Tech will win out-the Big 12 South is just way too good, and with Oklahoma and State up next, they'll be lucky to win one of those games, let alone both. That leaves Texas in the Big 12 championship game, and unless Missouri can beat them, it's hello Miami for Mack Brown and the boys, once again. This time it'll be against Florida, who I believe will be a slight favorite. Maybe they'll even beat them like they beat USC a while back. Stupid Matt Leinart, I still can't get over the "I think we're still the better team" line.

I think they are perennially (as in every year) overrated. I think that they start out high in the rankings because they are sports media darlings and every year, except for the year they played Texas for the national championship, they end up getting beaten by a no name team (Oregon State this year, Stanford & Oregon last year).

Look at the front page of ESPN.com right now

ESPN: The Worldwide Leader In Sports

Under the "Make This Happen" headline - pictures of Colt McCoy vrs Tim Tebow - seems many want to see the matchup. :)

Here's the article:
ESPN - Pat Forde: We're talking a playoff

Matt who? JK ;)

I think that if USC played Alabama, they'd get their lungs handed to them (JMHO).

But, who knows? Anyone can win on any day - that's why they play the game. Mississippi beat Florida, Oregon State beat USC- both examples of why the game is played on the field, not on a statistician's sheet.

Really? I don't think Alabama has a national championship caliber quarterback, and if USC brought the heat, Wilson wouldn't be able to make the decisions. No doubt it would be a good game, though- but I think Mark Sanchez would be the wild card in that one. Too bad it probably wouldn't happen-they'll probably end up playing Ohio State (zzz) in the Rose Bowl.

I disagree. I think it would be the other way around. See the thing about Alabama is that we don't really know how good they are. What they have is a great tradition/history (Bear Bryant and all that), and it's exciting for many to think that they'll have a resurgence in the SEC under Nick Saban, who is doing extremely well.

However, if you look at Bama's schedule: yes they're unbeaten, but they also have one signature win (Georgia, which was also beat badly by Florida) and a bunch of good wins against REALLY lackluster opponents (who hasn't beat Clemson, Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Tulane etc)?

This week's game against LSU (even a two-loss LSU) will probably be the most difficult game for the Crimson Tide of the reguar season. Auburn and Mississippi State probably won't put up much of a fight, and when Bama goes to the SEC Title Game, I expect them to get whipped by Florida.

Alabama's still a good team, an old school SEC team, and I would like to see them vs. a Big 12 team like Texas or OK. But I think the two best teams in the game right now are USC and Florida, which is why I'd love to see them against each other. (Fat chance though.) USC is absolutely loaded with talent and has all the potential-- I really think when they lose it's not because the other team is better overall, but because USC didn't feel like playing their best.

(PS: Go Texas Tech beat Okie State!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Rachel_Dawes, I couldn't have said it any better myself.

One point to make here. We have some (small) idea of how USC's defense would be against a strong Big-12 offense like Texas' - because they've played before! Yes, Texas's offense is essentially all-new and very different from Vince Young's, but USC's defense is littered with veterans of that 2005 Rose Bowl. Cary Harris, Kaluka Maiava, Rey Maualuga, Clay Matthews, Fili Moala, and Kyle Moore all played in that Rose Bowl, and Brian Cushing and Josh Pinkard even started.

I know it doesn't mean a whole lot (since things can change very much in 3 years) but frankly, USC's defense this year is infinitely more experienced and capable than that 2005 defense and would certainly hold any high-powered offense in the nation in check - the only real question mark is whether the offense can keep up anywhere close to back in 2005 (the 2005 USC offense was clearly the best in school history and some might argue one of the best in the history of college football)

Also, I can certainly believe discussion over whether USC would win/lose against any number of top-10 teams, but honestly, USC isn't going to get blown out by anyone.

Observe USC's margin of defeat in all 9 defeats of Pete Carroll's tenure (minus the first season):

2008: 6 pts
2007: 1 and 7 pts
2006: 2 and 4 pts
2005: 3 pts
2004: 0 pts (undefeated)
2003: 3 pts (in OT)
2002: 7 and 3 pts.

That's 36 points total, an average of 4 points per game. Sure, maybe it's the fact that USC would lose against the top 3/4/5 teams in the nation, but they're not going to be downed by 21 or 14 points (10 might be on the edge of reason) - it's just statistically unlikely.
