College Football Fans Gone Bad

Anyone else see this yet? It's a video of a Penn State frat (seems to be Pike) unleashing wrath on two Ohio State fans who wandered into "their" territory last Saturday before the "big" game (Ohio State won, btw, 37-17). And its making a lot of people very, very angry.

The Daily Collegian, Penn State's paper, has the story http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2007/10/31/fan_violence_flares.aspx

Sports blog Every Day Should Be Saturday made a post about it: http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/?p=4094

Anyone else have stories of college football fans/rivalries gone too far? I remember just last year after the game, a bunch of UCLA fans used a broken bottle to gouge out the eye of a USC fan in the Rose Bowl parking lot.

While it sucks for that particular Ohio State fan, it's pretty much par for the course in regards to the typical behavior most Ohio State fans practice. I have a couple of friends who went to Michigan, and even though they had the opportunity to go to last year's #1 vs #2 match, they refused because they knew how they'd be treated in Columbus.

That said, not all rivalries are like this. Last year I went to the Big XII championship game between Oklahoma and Nebraska, and the only way to describe the interactions between fans was friendly. Most of the conversations I had with OU fans were along the lines of "this is the way it should be every year" and "we're glad to be playing you guys". It was a really cool (and bitterly cold) tailgating afternoon...

I'm pretty sure some Alabama fan got stabbed here at Auburn a couple years ago, by wandering into Frat Row drunk and yelling ROLL TIDE in the middle of a bunch of drunken frat guys. Hilarity ensued, of course, including a side trip to the hospital for the stabbed guy (it wasn't bad, he just needed stitches).

Honestly, I know it's a bitter rivalry and all, and I'm sure they don't like me as much as I don't like them, but we could at least be civil to each other. I'm not a heckler, and I don't like to boo the other team (well, maybe LSU but their fans are generally considered the worst in the SEC. other fans are scared to go to the swamp bc of it), but when Bama fans throw a bottle and hit one of your players in the head with it when they lose (it happened last year), that's just poor sportsmanship. I'm not saying an Auburn fan hasn't ever done this before, but I haven't ever seen it since I've been here and I've certainly never done anything like that before.

Penn State fans do not have much class.

I think the Alabama/Auburn rivalry is awful. Too many people take it too seriously, if you ask me. I think it's great that some people have a little spirit, but if you're going to seriously harm someone because they're for another team, then you've plain crossed the line. It's stupid and embarrassing for both schools involved.

...When has someone been stabbed but not badly? (Humor implied)

Looks like YouTube link went dead. Here's the video hosted on PSU's site: http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2007/10/31/osu_fans.html

Penn State's Pi Kappa Alpha chapter was supsended, btw, by both the international office and by the university.

I don't know much about general fan behavior in the SEC, but I've heard bad things about LSU. I didn't know the Auburn-Alabama rivalry was that heated either.

Haha I witnessed this event. It was funny if you were drunk.

Go Penn State!!!!

Auburn-Alabama is hardcore. People do crazy stuff over it. I have a friend who goes here to Auburn and her whole family is Alabama fans. Her parents threatened not to pay for anything if she didn't go to Bama. (they did eventually agree to pay for it though, after much nagging and scholarship winning by the girl).

alabama has no other sports teams so everyone in the state lives for the game. its pretty much over the top tho, and unfortunately some people have nothing else that is worthwhile in their life, so they exist solely to chant roll tide or war eagle.

Bama has a solid basketball team this year and you can always count on UAB as a March Madness sleeper.

AUlostchick, LSU plays in Death Valley, not the Swamp (that's UF). There are fans who are jerks everywhere, not just in the SEC.

sorry, yeah, I knew that. Duh, I'm dumb for mixing that up.

But yeah, I was just talking about the SEC because that's the one I know the most about. LSU fans are known for being jerks, even outside the SEC, from what I hear. I've never seen another team's fan have that level of douchebaggery, even Alabama and lord knows I'm no lover of Bama fans. But I've never really heard about Florida, UGA, Tennessee, etc. acting like complete morons and being total asses to all the other teams' fans.

I've been going to LSU games since I was six years old and I feel that reputation is somewhat undeserved. I've never seen an LSU fan do anything like what the Penn State guys in the video did. I've been to Florida, Bama, UGA, and Tennessee for games and Georgia was by far the worst. They have no class.

The funny thing about this incident is that the person being charged is a Pitt student not a PSU student
