Do first tier colleges require foreign language classes as a freshman? Also, can you waive it with a 5 in a foreign AP test? I wanted to know since I'm deciding whether or not to take AP Chinese as self study. Thanks.

Well, universities have usually a language requirement for a major-2 semesters of a language. Also, they usually give you one semester of credit for a 3 or may be 4 and the 2 semesters for a 4 or a 5. A 5 will usually fulfill the language requirement or at least get you some credit.

At Pitt, they require three years of a language - they could care less whether you have three years of Spanish or AP credit in German, Spanish, and Chinese. A "5" won't wave the requirement; three years of a HS language class will.

yes they usually require foreign language and yes you can waive foreign language credit w/ a 5. i checked on harvard's website. but i suppose it depends on the school.

Yale is the only really good school I know of where students have to take at least one foreign language class no matter what. But more is required if you don't have AP credit. No matter where you go, AP credit will help, except Brown, which doesn't have a language requirement.

Most school will but sometimes it depends on your major. I know any major with the word international required at least two years of a language.
