college funding for an international

Hi everyone!!

I’m hoping a current student or parent can help me here. Oh well anyone can answer to this because it’s kind of general…..

College funding……

Just a preface, I’m an international student and was accepted at WPI EA (it was my first choice, still is) with 30k in aid…the problem, I can only afford 20k and that too is kinnda tough, so basically I’m 10k short.

Are there any really good ways I can fill the gap? Loans won’t help coz I can’t take from the US for obvious reasons (co-signer) and I can’t take them from the place I’m at right now, coz I’m not in my home country, also any loans taken from here won’t be on my name will be my family’s and I don’t want that.

I thought about on campus job but that won’t fill the gap and it’s not guaranteed either, the job that is.

Off campus housing can save a bit, I’m guessing 2k to 3k, but as an international who hasn’t been in the USA, like ever, I don’t think that can be a good idea, also wpi’s website says that the university will not take part in any negotiations with off campus housing.

Co-op... maybe, but that is just in year 3 or so. I need some way to fill 10k per year, that’s 40k in 4 years..

Also, I have already appealed to the aid I got and did not get a likely response from the uni so that gate’s shut too…

Any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated…

Borrowing in your home country probably is your best option.

Go to school part-time and work part-time.

Excellent suggestion –> “Violate the terms of your student visa.” NOT!!!

An international student studying in the United States is permitted to attend school . . . not get a job. So this would NOT be a solution. Further, the OP would not be permitted to enter the United States in the first place without being able to demonstrate - in advance - that he or she has the funds needed to attend school here.

Unfortunately, the situation is the same for the OP as it is for many American students - a $10k/year gap means that this college simply isn’t affordable.

If you cannot demonstrate that you have all of the costs of your studies covered through a combination of aid from the university, and money from other sources (loans from your own country, family money, etc.) you will not get your student visa. You need to discuss this with your family, and see what is available where you are.
