College Funding!!

Parents annual income is about 17K, I want to attend a college for business. Im thinking about UCI and SDSU. How much will FAFSA pay me and exactly how does the Gold + Blue scholarship work? Will everything be paid for?

FAFSA won’t pay you anything. It is just a federal form that tells you how much federal loans you qualify for as well as a few modest grants, like the Pell Grant (around 5k).

If your family’s income is only 17K and you live in California, you will likely qualify for a good range of loans and grants. If you qualify for B&G, it means your FEES (tuition costs) at the public UCs (and I think CSUs) will be basically covered. If your fees are 11K in tuition at UCI, you would get grants up to but not exceeding that 11K. You will probably get a Pell Grant (about 5K) and maybe some other small assistance on top of that which you can apply toward housing, food, books, etc.

You may need to take out a Fed Subsidized Loan (3500 for freshman year) which you will qualify for. Often there will be Work Study–money you need to earn via a job on campus as well.

Basically, at your income level, quite a bit would be covered (if qualifying) to attend a UC. However, many “0 EFC” students are shocked when they find out that they need to take out a Fed Sub Loan or do Work Study even after all the grants are figured in–so don’t assume it is a 100% free ride. However, at 17K, it will likely be about a good a package as there is for a student from a low-income family.

Blue and Gold is ONLY for UCs…not for Cal States.

B&G promises that tuition is covered…not a promise that room, board, books, etc are covered. The promise uses a combo of Pell, Cal Grants, etc to get tuition (fees) covered.

However, if you get into a UC, since you will be a 0 EFC, it’s very likely all your costs will be covered. You need to try to get into a UC…even if it’s not UCI. Apply to a few - including Merced and Riverside and Santa Cruz.

Are your stats high enough for a UC?

my stats are a bit below average, however my extra activities are way above average with various hospital internships, and working with the chamber of commerce, and immense school involvement. I want to go there for the business program.

Do you also recommend hiring someone to help me fill out FAFSA and help in writing a decent app?

SAT 1580 ACT 25

Do you also recommend hiring someone to help me fill out FAFSA and help in writing a decent app?

The FAFSA is not difficult to fill out IF you have all of the information. I would not suggest spending money hiring someone to do this for you. Do it yourself. There is a worksheet you can print out and complete that will help you with this process.

RE: doing a decent application? You need to do your OWN application. YOU are the one applying to college, not someone you hire. You will want to have others proofread your essays and your applications before you hit the send button…but again…I would not suggest hiring someone to do so.

Thousands upon thousands of college wannabees complete their applications and FAFSA forms without hiring someone to help them. You can do it too.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON’T MISS ANY DEADLINES…financial aid and application deadlines. Don’t miss them.

Why would someone whose family earns $17k per year even consider hiring someone to help with FAFSA or apps?

When a family’s income is that low, filling out FAFSA is probably super easy.

I know that you say that you have great ECs, but ECs do NOT make up for lowish stats …especially for UCs and Cal States because the initial screening to eliminate a bunch of kids is only looking at stats. ECs may be used to further eliminate students once they are down to a smaller number.

you need to retest. (get prep books from the library).

You need to make sure that you apply to a Cal State that you can commute to…as a safety.

I think your ACT 25 will be ok for many Cal States…but we don’t know your GPA

What is your GPA…Calif publics are very GPA driven.

You need to check the common data set for the colleges OR use Naviance to see whether your scores/gpa are in the “range” for accepted students at the schools to which you are applying. Even with that…remember that EVERY year is a different year of applicants so when YOU apply, you will be competing for admissions with students who are applying THAT year.

I agree you should take the SAT again…or try the ACT.

Is your GPA posted here weighted or unweighted?

its 3.6 based on the 5 point scale, im not sure whether its weighted or unweighted
