I've searched through this site for a question like mine, and there might be a thread already about this but I have yet to come across it.

I was wondering if I am eligible for Blue + Gold plan for UCI even though my EFC is around 25,000. My dad runs a single parent house with 4 children and his income is less than $70,000. Because of the information we put on the FAFSA, our EFC came to be around as high as I stated. The B+G plan says that if my family's income is less than 80k, then the plan would cover my tuition costs. I received notice that I am not eligible for the pell grant, and I am awaiting my cal grant numbers, but I am expecting to not get any.

Our EFC is 25,000 but with my dad's income, it will be difficult to pay for the CoA. Thank you for any answers that is coming.

If you need me to specify any more details for an answer, please ask.

The good news is that the UC Blue and Gold plan only looks at income, rather than the income + assets guidelines that the CalGrant has.

So, in your case, it looks like you may or may not be eligible for CalGrant, but it looks like you meet the criteria for Blue and Gold.

This situation happened to us, where we got the Blue and Gold, but not a CalGrant. It covers all of the ‘tuition’ but not all of the associated fees. I think there was about a $700 difference between the total tuition and fees and the amount of the Blue and Gold.

Of course, we still had to cover housing, misc expenses, etc.

B&G like Cal Grant has an income ceiling to meet and filing requirements (note Cal Grant has an additional asset ceiling to meet as well). It is not based on EFC and there is only one income ceiling regardless of family size. If your family makes less than $80k and you filed both a FAFSA and a GPA verification form, then you are eligible for B&G.

If you receive Cal Grant, you will have B&G met and will not receive additional funds. B&G only guarantees systemwide fees (in terms of speaking about Cal Grant and B&G, it does matter that the fees be specified by name, either systemwide or campus, and not called tuition because the “tuition” charged to residents is actually called “educational fee” and is only a fraction of the systemwide fees) will be met through any combination of grants and/or scholarships. It will not cover room&board nor is there a guarantee that campus fees will be covered.

I am surprised you haven’t heard from CSAC yet about Cal Grant yet. Did you submit everything before March 2? Have you checked your CSAC portal? Also, bills should be due soon if not already for the quarter system based UCs. I don’t know UCI’s billing schedule, but I know both Davis and Santa Cruz are due shortly so the other campuses shouldn’t be terribly sooner or later. Have you not gotten an FA package yet?

The reason I myself did not get my Cal grant yet was because UCI kept asking us for information that we overlooked when we first turned in our FAFSA. I did meet the March 2 deadlines and turned in the GPA verification. I initially did have awards from pell and cal grants, but with new information, the EFC got shot up. =/

If there is anything else I should know, I would appreciate some more answers. But thank you for posting! It is looking positive for me if what you guys said is true!

I don’t usually deal with this stuff but I’ve received Blue and Gold last year and asked the FA office why it didn’t appear on my award this year and I only got half the award money that I should get.

The first time I asked they said, “you are eligible, wait until mid-August.”
That past and the second time I asked they said, “wait until mid-October.” And this took place at Aldrich Hall.

I don’t have high hopes for the next time I ask.
