Hello. I am entering junior at high school and have started to start my search for the college I want to attend. Here are the schools I am interested in so far: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UPenn, Columbia, Brown and UChicago. Now, I know that I have to visit the colleges to know that I am a right fit(I would rather have people who actually attended these colleges), but I can’t visit all of them. So, what I decided was that I am going to try and go online, describe myself, and find people who attend the colleges listed and see if I would be a fit for that college. Then go visit my top 3 college choices. So here I go:

I am an African American. When people describe me, they usually think that I am a nerd-esque type of person. I am nerdy in the way that I like watching Japanese anime and playing card games, but not nerdy in the way where I know things and act like a stupid teacher’s pet. I play Yugioh and Magic: The Gathering (Don’t judge me:))

People always ask me for help. I help them in a way that doesn’t involve some long ass explanation but I explain it out easy and to the best of my knowledge. Right now I think I am not the best socially. I think this is because I stay in my room all day and never get involved in anything. This is going to change. When I enter junior year, I am going to join Chess Club, Video Game Club, Theater (Back stage or in the play), and student government. ( I am also thinking of starting a card game club, as I know a few people who like to play.)

When I go to college, I want a lot of diversity. This concept is a little misunderstood. Usually people think that there just has to be there. No. I want minorities mixing it up with other minorities and White people. I don’t want self-segregation. In my high school, there is some of that, especially with the Asian and Latino communities. In terms of Academics, well I want to have a top-notch one. But I don’t want it to surround my whole life. I don’t want to be locked in my room doing homework all the time. I want a good mix between my academic and social life.

P.S. I know that each college will have a place where I can “fit in.” But I want to be able to hang out with a variety of people, like jocks and etc.

You need to re-read your prior post for advice. You’ve left out some information like grades and scores. Make sure you have a safety that you can get in to and can afford.

@barrk I live in Minnesota; Money is not a problem as I am in a program that is going to help me cover it and I have been thinking of majoring in Chemical Engineering.

@ED I get A’s; I also am involved in a number of AP and HP( High Performance) classes. and I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT. Pretend I can get accepted into each of these colleges. I guess my main post is about the social scene and how I might be able to fit into it. If you cant answer or help please don’t reply. Thank You!

P.S. If you have questions for more info, I’ll answer.

From what I’ve seen, Princeton is a pretty laid back place. We’re in a small college town and you don’t get the distractions of a big city. It’s a beautiful campus and most of the students are happy to be there.

Also, admissions is not only about whether the college is right for you, but whether you’re right for the college. You be strong in something the college wants. For instance, you can be an athlete. Or a musician. Or a scientist. Or a really good chess player. The Ivies want a student who can contribute to campus life in other ways besides academics. So SAT and ACT scores matter, but not that much. What’s your passion?

@Erin’s Dad I never took Psat’s and the plan test, never studied for it. Plus, I didn’t really know it was timed until they told us that day. As for the score, I know a few seniors who took the plan test sophomore year and got 20. Yet they still got accepted into top colleges. I am a sophomore going into junior year. I plan on studying really hard and trying my best to get a really good score on my sat’s and act’s. Not to metion the school I go to is mainly known for athletics. Our school is ranked 311th out of 453 public high schools in Minnesota. Not one of the best as you can see. But I still plan on working my ass of to get where I need to be.
