College Honors! Help!

I'm a first year at UCLA and I wanted to know how important it is to be in the Honors Program for my future career and beyond. I'm hoping to minor in Accounting and Major in Business Econ or possibly something else (with the hopes of working for one of the Big Four accounting agencies or being a CPA...).

I've heard that there's a special notation on your transcript, but is it really worth all the effort of honors classes? Is getting grade-based honors (like Summa Cum Laude) as highly regarded as College Honors or how are they different?

Please let me know if you have any idea! Thanks!!

Grade-based honors are more important-seeming than college honors. Don't do it, because it won't be that important for your career.

it's not important for your career. it's just a cool thing to do, and will help expand your studies in ways that will make you more well-rounded. think of the honors program a bit like what GEs are supposed to do, but better. i still recommend the honors program, but don't do it with an end goal in mind, do it because you think you'll enjoy it and get something out of it that you otherwise wouldn't have.

Nobody in their right mind would throw away a potential job candidate who brings at least a Summa from UCLA on their resume. The person would at least glance at the resume/app. If you had to choose one to focus on, I'd choose the grade-based honors.

Like Liyana said, Honors is valuable for reasons other than a certificate. The Honors Collegium courses are great, usually around 20 people in various subjects that are invariably unique and interesting. Also, you can fulfill your honors units in a variety of ways, so there's flexibility. I'd recommend it because you get much closer faculty interaction than normal; I've made most of my connections to professors via the honors programs and I've used those connections for letters of rec. You also become eligible for scholarships every year as well. (Full Disclosure, I'm an Honors Fellow, so I'm not entirely impartial)

Hm, I don't really think that being in the honors program will have much direct impact for your career aspirations in accounting. Some people have mentioned that they found the honors classes to be worthwhile, so it's a personal decision; however, I had great luck picking and choosing seminars (not from honors collegium) that basically offered similar perks: small class size, great interaction where you are able to sort of suck at the marrow of your surroundings and participate in the discourse that goes on, great professor, interesting content, etc. I used to be in the honors program but dropped out because I didn't like dealing with all the logistics of it. It worked out fine for me, and I don't feel like I missed out on anything. The lack of the honors notation did not hurt me at all in recruiting, landing a job, etc.

I heard that college honors doesn't really matter.. but they're def good for teacher recommendations and if you want to get the "small college" feel..
