College Honors Program

The essay prompt asks: "If you could do research in any subject area, in what specifically, would you do your research? What experience(s) influenced your interest in this area?"
Do I have to be specific to a Ucla class or subject, or can I be more general?

You can be general. Also, I've never heard of anyone getting rejected from the Honors program as long as you complete the application and meet the requirements, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thank You!

i was wondering about this. what exactly does the college honors program do?

i know you get priority housing...i would assume that you also get priority class registration...don't really know though.

http://www.college.ucla.edu/up/honors/choverview.html

^that link tell all about benefits and such, though it doesn't list priority housing. i found that at the housing site, where they say this:

Specially-Recruited Students
Honors students, alumni scholars, and other specially-recruited students who apply for university housing must also submit an application with the appropriate fee and meet all subsequent deadlines to be eligible for priority housing assignment status.

who all is going to college honors day on wed the 12th? i am!

Actually, I wasn't in honors last year and they also gave me a "priority" sign-up time; in fact I don't know anyone who didn't get a "priority" housing sign-up. I think it's kind of misleading the way they word it. I'm not currently in honors and yet my "priority" housing signup time this year was a day earlier than my friend who was actually in honors, so...yea. I don't know.

But yea, you DO get priority class registration, which is nice, especially if you're trying to get into the more popular classes.

boo the honors days are all filled up - *** that is so annoying, this is why i want to go to a private school, when is the honors college application due?

May 1st, I believe. I wonder when we found out whether we got it or not...

where do you sign up for honors days?

wow priority housing would sure be nice...
i'm going to the honors day tomorrow, and i'll hopefully have plenty of info to share about such things!
and i must say... those of you not staying in the ucla guest house are missing out. this place is great!

okay so i just attended the college honors day. wow was that a full day!!! lots of walking/talking/hills/etc.

housing: honors program kids DO get preferential housing. might help you, might not. there's about 8,000 ppl who want on-campus housing, about 1,500 of which get preferential housing (athletics, other programs get it as well). those with ph get low lottery numbers (1-1500) and everyone else gets higher numbers (1500-rest of ppl). then there's a lotto, first with the ph ppl and then the rest. housing is randomly assigned, so when your number comes up, they try to then match you with your preferences.

classes: we also DO get priority registration. starts the second quarter, can be used for 8-10 units per quarter.

so... there was a whole lot of info thrown at us today. toured the dorms and the campus, ate the food, etc.
if anyone who wanted to go to honors day but couldn't has any questions i'd be happy to answer them the next time i have internet again (tonite or sunday nite).
if anyone's curious... i'm not sure yet, but i'm strongly leaning toward attending ucla. today made a huge impression on me. either that or davis w/regents or scripps... but prolly here. best of luck to the rest of you considering ucla!

hey which dorms did u like better? the plazas or the residential halls?

liyana do you have any pictures of dorms? or anyone else for that matter?

I went to Honors Day today as well.

I don't have any pictures, but I personally thought the plazas (I saw a triple) were much nicer...roomier, with a relatively private bathroom. However, I also saw a triple in a residential hall...very tiny, very crowded, but not completely unlivable...in fact, my tour guide (a first year) said she really loved living in a residential hall and wanted to stay in one next year as well.

They said that there will be more triples than last year because they're closing down one of the residential halls for rennovation, and also that most freshmen end up in housing that's further up the hill. My legs still hurt from all the walking up to Hedrick and from walking around campus...

Oh is that what that was? God sooooooooooooo many people on campus lately.

I'm in College Honors, but I'm a transfer so my program is a little different than the 4 year program.

Priority registration is good and bad. Its great during priority pass when you're trying to get into a 15 person class. And then it sucks 3 or 4 weeks later because we get the absolute last 2nd pass appointments available. I don't much see the point in getting into 2 classes early if I'm going to be screwed over for the last ones. However, I'd still take priority over not, and I've always been automatically let into classes that I was waitlisted for.

I'm off campus so I don't know anything about priority housing, but since Sproul is closing I don't know how that's going to work out.
