College Insomnia

Has she had a good sleep yet?

Just wanted to update all of you helpful people. We (my H and I) are working on it with her. There are appointments set up, and the wheels are moving to get to a resolution. Thank you to everyone for your input.

Thanks for updating - been thinking about you all!

Thanks for the update. I have also been thinking about her (and you) and hoping things are heading in a better direction.

Hope she sleeps in the short term and learns to sleep over the long term, through whatever modality works. You are obviously great parents. Good luck!

I take Valerian herbal tablets and they really help. Her brain has gotten locked into the same pattern night after night and doesn’t know how to get off that same path.

@brantly I really wish I had seen this earlier, because we went through the EXACT same thing the first time my daughter went away to a summer program. This child also has anxiety issues, and she was also not getting to sleep until 3 or 4 a.m. And, we were getting those 1 a.m. phone calls as well.

You mentioned that melatonin wasn’t working. We tried that out on D with similar results, but what no one told us was that it takes several weeks (4-8) for melatonin to really kick in. Her counselor took her to get some Zzquil, and that seemed to work almost immediately for the sleep. She only took it for 3-4 days before she finally felt rested enough to deal with the anxiety. But, she was able to deal with it. She continues to take the melatonin during stressful times in her life and has learned some personal coping techniques for the anxiety thanks to a family friend who’s a psychiatrist.

a sleep medicine specialist (often board certified neurologist, sometimes ent’s or pulmonologists) can help rule in or out causes including anxiety, sleep apnea etc etc…

advil pm and such are for the occasional night of sleep issues like being nervous about a final exam . there is no shame in seeking professional help to fix a serious issue.

^ Have you read the thread?

I’m late to the thread but I think it’s really good that @brantly was there and willing to do the late night calls.

I lost my mother this past spring, and something I can never recreate is how I felt when I couldn’t sleep and she said “if you close your eyes your body will still get a lot of the same benefits and you don’t need to panic”

I have no idea if this is true but please don’t tell me if it isn’t because it allayed my anxiety when I was the OP’s daughter’s age.
