Terrible insomnia?

I've had a problem falling asleep for about 3 years now but ever since I've started college it's gone to a whole new level. I go 4-5 days at a time with 2-3 hours of sleep, and many nights I don't sleep at all. I've read just about every suggestion list on how to fall asleep but none have worked.

I walk about 2 miles a day to and from class, jog another mile at the gym, and play basketball when I have time, so by the end of the day I'm normally exhausted. I'm also an engineering major (taking 15 credits this semester). However, I haven't really been stressed out yet due to the workload (it's only the 3rd week of school). I've been eating normally, trying to go to sleep earlier, abstaining from video games (don't have them in my room), and doing just about everything that I've been told to do on the internet.

I find myself very tired during the day (can't take a nap due to homework/classes), but as soon as I go to bed at night, my eyes just don't wanna close -.-

Out of desperation, I tried to take ZzzQuil last night (a non-habit forming sleep aid) but that proved futile and I ended up staying up till about 6 AM.

Should I seek professional help for this problem, or is there a way to fix this? thanks.

If you’ve had this problem for 3 years, it’s only getting worse, you can’t control it, and it’s interfering with you living your life, then you should certainly seek professional help. Sleep is so important, it makes no sense whatsoever to ignore whatever problems you might have.

It hasn’t been to this extent for the past 3 years. Occasionally I would go a couple nights without sleep and sometimes it would get outside the norm, but overall I could count on 6-7 hours of sleep most nights. Now if I get 4 hours of sleep I consider it a blessing.

Are you on your computer up until the time you try to go to sleep? My daughter was doing that her first year of college and once she started turning her computer off a few hours before she wanted to go to sleep she was able to sleep much better.

If you aren’t on your computer right before bed I think you should see a doctor to figure out what is going on.

I need some help getting to sleep too. It is not good. I go to sleep at 10-11 AM and wake up at 7 PM.

I have chronic insomnia, and I was put on a prescription sleep aid which has helped immensely.

There are lifestyle changes you can make to get more sleep, but insomnia can also be a physical or psychological condition. If this is the case, these tricks will prove worthless.

I would see a doctor. If the typical suggestions aren’t working, something else is going on. You don’t deserve to have to deal with this, especially when you’ve got other things to worry about.
