College is not about education anymore

Gen ed is ********. A post-industrial, service economy requires specialists. People who know how to do 1, 2 or maybe 3 things, and do them better than anyone else. Not people who are mediocre at everything.

Because they’re general education classes req. for graduation. They want you to take other things to make you a well rounded candidate when you’re out of college.

Everyone knows gen ed is a joke. Nobody takes them seriously. More importantly, it’s a waste of time and frankly revenue protection for colleges. Without gen ed, you can finish college in 3 years, maybe even 2.

Employers want specialists. They don’t give a damn about your well-roundedness.

Oh well, the political policy within the higher institution of education system. We just have to take them and get a 4.0 and deal with it. Unless someone signs a petition in front of the office.

Pretty much. It’s nice to be well-rounded in conversation… it makes you a more interesting person to talk to… but you really will never need to know the stuff you learned in chemistry class when you’re auditing companies for an accounting firm.

College should either be about education or about training to get a piece of paper that says you can do something (let’s be honest, you don’t need to spend 4 years and thousands of dollars to do a lot of jobs. You could learn the stuff necessary for most specific jobs a lot faster than that). But it needs to pick a side.
