Okay, so I’ve been a huge fan of Northeastern University for a LONG time. It’s near home, it’s a great school, etc. My grades aren’t supper amazing (top 10% in whole grade, but still kinda low GPA, to my standards at least) to apply to Ivy League schools, so NEU is a wonderful choice to me to apply to.
Except I’m not sure what to major in. I’m leaning towards international relations and global affairs, but I don’t know if I want to find a career in politics and such, I’m interested in the subject though. I like Emerson College because they have a really good writing program, and I love writing. I’m not sure how good the writing program is at NEU. I looked into both majors, and it doesn’t seem like either offers great paying jobs. My senior schedule seems to be leaning more towards political classes, so…
I’m also a little scared that people (like my family) will be like “why are you going to a college that not that many people hear of? Why don’t you go to a top college like Harvard and NEU?” I don’t know. Thoughts?
Honestly, in my opinion it’s not a great idea to go to a college for one particular major. Undergraduate students change their minds so much - because of their interests, or career realities, or whatever. It’d be not so great to choose a school (like Emerson) because you liked one specific program only to realize that you actually don’t want to study that anymore. If you don’t know what you want to major in, you can always start undecided and explore a bit before settling on something.
That said, it sounds like you’re maybe a rising senior, so don’t worry about this yet. You have to apply and be admitted, so just apply to both of them and hold off on making any decisions until spring of next year.
Hey, NEU student here
Based on that alone, I don’t think going to Emerson is the right call for now. Emerson has amazing programs, but they only offer a certain selection of majors - unless you are very sure in your general direction, I would not advise going there. I know two people who know Emerson well - a Comm student at Northeastern and a student who is transferring to Northeastern from Emerson because they want to do Engineering. In the latter case, she has had to deal with a lot of problems due to the change of major. Another good friend of mine started as a writing major at Brown - she’s now Neuroscience but hasn’t had to deal with all the problems of transferring because of the academic diversity there. It really makes a difference.
The average college student switches majors 3 times - if you change to something your college doesn’t offer, you’re in a pickle.
Of course, if you really solidify your major by admissions, that’s a different story. Emerson is worth applying to regardless, but make sure you have plenty of options with major options at all 3 reach/match/safety levels as well.
