If you are going to have roommate(s) than see if you can contact them ahead of time and not duplicate things. You may value a little extra space. I can't imagine more than one floor lamp being needed.

Ha, my roommate is my twin....and its a suite, so we each have our own room and share a bathroom....

Two categories here: essentials and "nice to have."

Essentials are a computer, desk lamp, etc.

Nice to have includes rug, refrigerator, floor lamp, microwave, ironing board, iPod, digital camera... your alarm clock may be in your cell phone.

I can think of a few things ... surge protector, coffee mug/plastic cups/bowl/plate/cutlery, hamper for dirty clothes, maybe a fan depending upon the type of room you are in, maybe some underbed storage bins if you loft your bed (or even if you don't).

i have the ironing board, iron, ipod, digital camera, flashdrive, laptop and accessories, and floor lamp, and i have some nice hard plastic cutlery, and i think i may have a desk lamp...

check out the very first thread in Parent Cafe.

The list really helped me last year. Also start saving the coupons for Bed Bath Beyond and Linen n Things now. Also it's so important not to buy too much stuff until you know who your roomate is. No sense in getting a refrig or micro or a rug or whatever if your roomie has them already!

I'm a twin lol, so we are going to share a fridge, microwave and everything else lol

Do BBB have really good sales (and when?)

A laptop lock (to lock your laptop to your desk).

DS's advice. Put everything you THINK you need into one room of your house (say your living room). Look at the pile. Take 1/2 of what is there. You won't miss the other half, and you won't have room for it anyway.

Re: drawers...the underbed boxes (get ones with wheels) are better than the freestanding plastic drawer units...there's not a lot of floor space in a dorm.

Re: lamps. Both of my kids did NOT take floor lamps. They took a desk lamp AND a clip on lamp (clipped either onto the end of a bookshelf or onto the bedframe).

If you don't iron your clothes at home, don't bother taking the ironing supplies with you. The only kids who used them at my kids' schools are the music majors (who needed dress up clothes frequently) and the ROTC folks.

In addition to a flash drive, both of my kids have external hard drives that they save their "stuff" too also....just in case of a computer failure. Worth the money.

Add to that a small first aid box containing bandaids, antiseptic, some OTCs such as Tylenol, IcyHot for aches and sprains, anti-diarrheal meds, milk of magnesia etc.

Duct Tape!

BBB doesn't have a ton of great sales. But if you hoard the coupons, you will get 20% off everything. Ask friends and relatives to save the coupons for you if they don't have someone headed off to school in the fall. Also, you can select what you want at a store near your home and arrange to pick it up at a store near your school.

Some dorms won't allow a separate fridge and microwave but dictate they must be a combo due to power concerns. Check on this before you go out and buy stuff. Another option is to just rent it so you won't have to bother with moving it all the time but with your twin as a roommate this might be more costly.

Dank Nugs????

yeah, they are a must-have for college success.

It's probably better to not take them on the plane.

When my S went up to college, we went with the theory that less is better. He did bring with him a laptop we purchased shortly before he left. I also purchased some long pants for him (he lives in cargo shorts & t-shirts). He also brought a lightweight rolling suitcase & a rolling dufflebag and clothes. I was able to buy two sets of flannel extra-long twin sheet sets @ $9.99 apiece including postage, so we washed & brought them as well, and a few school supplies.

We purchased mostly everything else once we got to his campus. There was a Target, Office Depot, Costco and other stores, so we just bought the few extras as he figured out what he wanted/needed and fit. We did buy a printer/fax machine. The dorm supplied a combo fridge/microwave. His room mate bought a TV. He scrounged some hangers and shelf paper.

It is really important to check what the school/housing provides so you don't bother bringing/purchasing things that are already there (it's a storage problem if you have duplicates of things). Especially if you're living in an apartment, please check to be sure you're not duplicating, since that's where you really need more "stuff" for the kitchen, etc.
