Hey guys,

I chose to do chemical biology in the College of Chemistry. I was just wondering if it was possible to actually get into medical school with this major or if you're just plain screwed... because I'm more interested in chemistry than in biology, but later on, I want to go to medical school. Is it possible, or is it just such a GPA killer that you're not going to make it? Should I change colleges/ majors? Thanks!

From what I heard, Chemical Biology is NOT a good path at all to pursue premed.

If you want to make yourself an exception to the rule, go for it!

CoC is a GPA killer (speaking from experience). Yes you can work really hard and yes there are people with beautiful GPAs…But the average person really will have more free time (to get quality grades, have time to do the other stuff med school wants and take time for yourself) in L&S. L&S also has a chemistry major, and more electives, so you can take classes in biochem or history or whatever else interests you. (some med schools have a bunch of Humanities classes requirements too I think - non-premed speaking)

Anecdotally, most of the premeds I know switched out, or at least very strongly considered switching out, of the CoC during the first semester. You could always try Chem 4A, be shocked by the workload/material and decide then.

Strongly recommend L&S if you’re planning on going pre-med.

Don’t come to College of Chemistry if you want to do pre-med. Consider MCB: BMB in L&S if you want to do pre-med. Chemical biology in CoC is geared primarily for preparing students for graduate school.

Well don’t switch out yet unless you’re 100% sure you’re premed.

Most incoming freshmen don’t really know much about research and grad school and limit their options to premed/pre-business/prelaw. If you do end up liking the Chem/Biochem classes though and want to do the grad school path, the College of Chemistry is the way to go (#1 in the country!). And remember that it’s a lot easier to switch out of CoC than back into it.
