What are the admission requirements for NCSU college of design? I can't find any stats on line.

If you are asking for GPA/SAT test scores, the most current breakdown by “College” I could find is from 2009’s entering class:
[Table II SAT Percentile Equivalents by College](http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/admissions/sat/table2.htm)

If you are asking for applications made, accepted and enrolled, then go here:

The College of Design differs from the other Colleges, in that students must first pass the University admissions criteria. Assuming they pass that, their application is then forwarded to the COD for review, which culls it down even further to about 250-300, who then travel in late January for interview day on campus. My D is a current sophomore in COD, Art+Design major, and the year she applied we were told by the Dean that over 1,000 originally applied. However, the chart seems to indicate only 586, so I’m not sure I know how to interpret the numbers exactly.

I will say, as a caveat, I’ve heard Dean Malecha himself say that the COD is the one College at NCSU where a talented, design thinking kid, with a little less than average academics, may still have a shot if they can really demonstrate the talent and design thinking that the faculty are looking to attract…but it has to be a pretty impressive portfolio and interviews.

Klinger, thank you for sharing these links. When we visited in April, the Admissions Officer indicated that Design School expected 3000 applicants this year. I was thinking we had a 1 in 10 chance. Looks more like 1 in 2, and since DD has already made to design review, I’m thinking we are in good shape to plan a trip in January. Can you tell me if everyone is invited, or are some accepted after design review?

madoug, I’m not sure I understand completely, but I’ll do my best.

To answer your direct question, everyone is not invited. This was our experience:
- Only those who have passed the University Application phase (deadline was Nov. 1) will have their application package passed along to the College of Design (COD).
- The COD then reviews the application, the design essay, and the portfolio images that were upload with the application package.
- The COD will reject some based upon their review. They are sent back to University Admissions for possible 2nd choice of major.
- The COD will keep the others that they wish to interview. In December sometime they invite those applicants to Interview/Portfolio Day, which usually occurs late January. Interview attendance is mandatory, even for out of state and international applicants.
- After Interview Day, the COD faculty confer, make their selections over the next few weeks, and send out acceptance letters mid-March. Those not accepted after Interviews go back to University Admissions for possible acceptance into their 2nd choice of major.

That’s how I understand it. Numbers-wise, it all depends on the caliber of the applicant pool. But it also depends on your Design major. While all the majors are tough to get into, Architecture and Graphic Design are probably the most competitive, with Industrial Design and Art+Design tied behind those. Then again, it all depends on the talents and caliber of the applicant pool for the specific major you want. For example, Arch has far and away the most applicants, but also accepts more than the other majors.

Good luck

Thank you, klinger
The all that I was referring to would be in step 4. Sorry about the confusion. I was wondering if all those that pass the design review and invited for interview or if some were accepted without an interview. Based on the information provided, I would think then that everyone that moves past design review would be invited to interviews.

madoug, what are your daughter’s stats?

3.85, 1780 sat, strong EC’s, several art awards

Any idea how many get invited for interviews? What percentage of those interviewed that get in?
