I will be starting FAll 2013 at UP in the College of IST. I'm wondering if any current students have any comments on the program or advice that a freshman might benefit from. It would also be interesting to hear from any freshmen who will be starting at IST in the Fall. Also, I will be getting a new Laptop before I start, and was wondering if there are any preferences at IST in terms of MAC vs. PC or any suggested minimum specifications.

I’m going in as a freshmen next year and I learned some things that might come in handy to you at the Spend a Summer Day event:

1) Dual majoring in IST and SRA is really easy, as several of the courses are the same.

2) From what I saw in the labs, I recommended a PC. They’re a bit more open software-wise and offer a wider variety of programs. Most of the computers in the IST labs were PCs.

3) Laptop specs are really dependent on what you want to do. Are you going to do some PC gaming in your spare time? Are you thinking of messing with a few graphics effects programs as a minor? Or do you just plan to code and use network scanners?

If you would still like to speak with a current student email me at jmorales@ist.PSU.edu and I will put you in touch with one.
