I also plan on doing the interview this Fall

Thanks so much! Please be honest :)

My DS is also applying to William and Mary - so I’ve been doing a lot of research and following their admissions blog for some time. So, based on what I’ve learned from visits and the blog here’s my opinion:

Your GPA is good, your SAT is low (you might consider trying the ACT, my son did much better on that than the SAT). Being from NoVa may hurt you if a lot of kids from your school apply - you are compared to them first. Your number of AP’s is fine, but note that William and Mary likes to see AP Calculus and Physics (though they say it’s not a complete deal killer if you didn’t take those). What you really have going for you are your very interesting extra curriculars and since W&M looks wholistically these really help you. Also statistically your chances are better since you are in state and male. If W&M is your top choice, then apply early decision, as your chances are even better in that round.

I’d like to add onto what @vamominavabeach said. I do agree that raising your standardized test scores would be helpful in raising your chances for admissions. Although being from northern virginia is more difficult, it is less difficult than being from out of state, and so that is something to take into consideration. Primarily, I think William and Mary wants to see that you did challenge yourself, and although AP Physics and AP Calculus are wonderful, it is perfectly possible to get in without those courses, and I got in while taking the honors level respectively. I really do have to emphasize that W&M does look at students holistically, and they really do a great job of bringing people in from all different sorts of backgrounds.

If you have any questions at all about the school, don’t hesitate to ask. I am currently a freshman at W&M this year and I hope to see you part of the tribe!

Thank you both for the excellent responses!
As for AP Calc and AP Physics: I took only regular calc last year because that is the only thing guidance could fit me in. Even if there was room in the AP Calc room, that teacher was said to be a lot worse than the regular calc teacher. I may switch from regular physics to AP Physics. This will be interesting because I will have AP Stats, AP Literature, AP Gov, and then AP Physics all in the same term! I will have to see
I will definitely continue to work on those SATs and I am currently signed up for the September ACT.
Thanks again !!!

are you applying ED?

I am not sure yet. I will be doing an interview and a tour with them in September. That may sway whether or not I want to apply ED. Does it help your chances a lot though?
