College of Wooster v.s. St Lawrence University

I’ve narrowed down my list to these two schools and I don’t which one to chose. I’m undecided but am leaning toward sociology, business, or political science. Location isn’t an issue, price is a factor, but not too significant it’ll determine where I go. I want to go to a school where I can get a good education and have fun.

SLU: 20k a year
College of Wooster 22.5k a year

If you like crazy hockey games, SLU is the place to go. Also, top squash, skiing and equestrian teams.

SLU is one of the nicer schools around and rivals even some of its more selective peers in terms of what it offers.

We’ve been to both a few times – they both offer terrific educations, but they do have different feels, as well as strengths.

St L is paradise for the outdoorsy, winter sports kid as well as the kid interested in environmental sciences (you can do an Adirondacks semester which, as best as I recall, involves camping. Not my thing, but some kids would love it). It has serious team sports, with a D1 hockey team and a soccer team which goes deep into the national tournament most years. Athletic facilities are drop-dead gorgeous. There is serious winter there, and a small town with movie theater, some college-town restaurants, great farmer’s market on the weekend. Canton, NY is 2 hours from Syracuse and an hour and a half from Montreal (plus or minus some time). There is greek life, but we got the sense it is not overwhelming. There are some gorgeous new facilities, plus some lovely older buildings including the Dana dining hall which is cozy and known for its chocolate milk.

Wooster is known for its senior capstone project, that is a big part of the campus identity. The student body seems to have a broader range of “quirk” factor than St L. The town of Wooster has some great restaurants for foodies – we have had some great meals in the small area which, for a few blocks, feels like Smith St in Brooklyn (the part with great restaurants). Wooster seems to be, however, at least 60 minutes from any highway, so it is not dramatically more accessible than St L. The incoming President of the College is the former Dean at Williams, and my view is that Wooster will continue to rise in the rankings.

Great choices, congrats!
